July 9-July 15, 2013
FRIDAY, AND THIS WEEKEND: There will be the usual relaxing casual Friday, just bring yourselves...but remember that The Past Commodore's Cruise is this Friday, Saturday and Sunday July 12-14 at Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes. Bring your best Toga. The theme is “Animal House”. Friday's schedule is impromptu fun, while Saturday, dinner and drinks will be served by Immediate Past Commodore Troy Curran at 4pm. There will be prizes for the best toga, so dress to impress. Breakfast will be served on Sunday morning at 9am.
If you didn't sign up at the bar (13 or 14 boats did) please email Troy@tdcurran.com right now to confirm reservations at Anacortes; include boat name, length, and number of crew. Of course, if you’re coming by car, we just need the number of crew!
See you in Anacortes! --- P.C. Troy Curran
JOE CAN'T COUNT! In addition to the $400 table, there's yet another $250 one to "buy" with your boat's name and make and your family's names. The funds raised all go to improvements in our wonderful Clubhouse. Contact Joe Coons at firstname.lastname@example.org or (360) 739-1528.
GREAT LINKS FOR AMERICA'S CUP FANS: Thanks to Alex Marr, here are good links: About the History; about the Schedule; about Coverage; and about the Capsize!
A CHANGE FOR CHUCK & ROBERTA: After over a year of in-their-home care for the McCords, their family has arranged for them to be at Spring Creek on Bakerview where they both can get the significant assistance they need. Past Commodore Chuck, as you recall, suffered a stroke and has a growing brain tumor; Roberta's difficulties now are exhibiting the signs of Alzheimer's. Their family has been wonderfully caring and supportive with these tragic circumstances. Why not send a card? Their new address is Chuck & Roberta McCord, MC#9, 223 E. Bakerview Rd., Bellingham, WA 98226. These two did so much for our Club during its dark days in the 90's and early 2000's...maybe we can brighten theirs!
GOT KIDS IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD? Arne Ahlen is compiling a list of all the young folks in our BYC "family" (he has over 80 names already), and he wants to be sure yours are included. Send names and ages to him --- even if you think he already has them --- at email@example.com. That way he can keep you informed of youth activities here at our Club.
MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY NEEDED! If event planning is “not your thing”, here is a great alternative way to make an important contribution to the club. With Marian Welsh’s retirement from the BYC Membership Secretary post, the Club needs a replacement. This fulfilling position usually involves only a few hours per month on your own schedule, with few meetings to attend, and it quickly involves you and has you making new friends.
The Membership Secretary compiles new member applications, passes them through to the Board, prepares and mails new member packets, maintains our member data base, and shares information with the Jib Sheet, email, and name tag teams. The Secretary also helps with club mailings and the annual membership renewals, responding to membership information requests. Training is provided as the job is passed along. Contact Marian if you are interested at (360-527-2741) for more details.
BURGER SPECIAL CONTINUES: Our Wednesday Weekly Racing & Burger Night has continued to be a success and a fun evening at the club. In addition to our cheeseburgers, we will be offering vegetarian black bean burgers for our Club's non-meat eaters. Carnivore or not, come on down and enjoy a tasty burger and beverage this Wednesday! Also, if you'd like to get involved with grilling, please contact Matt Ouilette at firstname.lastname@example.org.
BUCCANEER'S CRUISE IS COMING: Aug. 16, 17 & 18 at Inati Bay, our outstation. This is all-ages event: treasure hunts, costume contests with awesome prizes, singalongs on Friday night, a movie on a sail, and dancing to Jasmine Greene and her band on Saturday.
Don't have a boat? No problem - bring your tent and camp-out. Water transportation will be available to and from on Saturday. Look for more info coming your way in next week's Jib Sheet!
THE PRICE OF PROGRESS: Effective 8/1, a number of our bar prices are going up slightly by two or four bits to cover our costs, the Bar Committee has announced. (They're still the lowest in town for our big pours and drafts!)
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR NOVEMBER 2: That's the date the 88th Annual Commodore's Ball will be held. This year we are having a Venetian Masquerade Ball. Color theme is gold, royal purple, silver and black. Now is the time to start searching for the perfect dress, and favorite mask, men included! I'm looking forward to a fun night of camaraderie and dancing. I hope you will join me. Details to follow later this summer. --- Michele Bodtke, Vice Commodore
YOUTH SAILING NEWS:
The summer sailing lessons are filling up nicely and we want to express our appreciation to the many BYC members who are enrolling their children in the program. With your support, we are confident that we can continue to build a vibrant program that serves the community's and the club's needs. --- Arne Ahlen
WOW IS JULY 27! Calling all women sailors and boat owners to participate in this year’s Women on the Water Regatta. We have skippers looking for crew, and we have women looking for boats, so we can connect everyone! Tierney Owens & Kathy Hansen are our WOW crew liaisons so to participate call Tierney at 360-305-7909!
Thanks to Tim Mumford, a one-man sponsor-recruiting crew. We have a ton of great raffle prizes this year thanks to Tim and all the businesses who donated. For a list, and to early-register, check the website at http://www.wowregatta.com.
Our next meeting for those interested in volunteering is Thursday, July 11th, at 5:30. ---Sally Poorman
PITCH POSTER UPDATE. Thanks to all of you that responded and helped spread PITCH posters last week. As I said, we need a few volunteers to help post them around Puget Sound; our intent is to have them posted in every yacht club and marine store from Olympia to Vancouver, BC. We have covered Vancouver, Bellingham, Everett, Seattle, Victoria and Friday Harbor but still need help on the south end with Tacoma and Olympia. Simply walk in with poster (tape & pins) in hand and ask the manager for permission and the location to post.
If you are travelling to these towns and would be willing to put up some posters please contact me to coordinate. We have a stack of PITCH posters in the front lobby and you are free to grab one if you can post it in a place that potential entrants may see it, just make sure to let me know where it is so we don’t duplicate efforts. Thanks! Randy Nulle 360-920-3178
FROM THE COMMODORE:
Summa time is finally here. Hope all of you are outdoors on the water enjoying this great place we live.
Special Thanks to Mick and Laura Corcoran and Larry and Carrie Beck for a grand Friday at 5! Thanks go out to those special ones who brought fantastic food to share as well! The doors were open and it was warm sunny night, thanks so much for being a big part of our all volunteer club. Be sure to enter those recipes in to our cook book entries! The food was terrific and everyone had a good time.
This week brings the Past Commodores Cruise and I understand that PC Troy Curran has a signup sheet on the bar at the Club for those that need moorage. If you miss that please contact him directly for directions and specific instructions. It should be a good time and everyone can attend by land or sea!
We are trying to organize a mini golf event at the Sudden Valley Golf course on Aug 10 or 11th. If this is something you would be interested in please give me a shout. If there is enough interest we will have a meeting very soon! Have a wonderful week! Fair Winds and Following Seas --- Jody King Erickson (360) 223-2119 email@example.com
