APRIL 8 - APRIL 14, 2014
THE CLUB SCRUB IS THIS SATURDAY! The date crept up on us, and we forgot to remind you, and there's not as much as usual to get done...but we're hoping to have a good turnout anyhow. Here's the drill: Come around 8:30 or 9:00 (or even later).  Pitch in on a task of your choice, cleaning, dusting, window washing, pressure washing (please bring a PW).  We'll get out the summer furniture and get the place spick and span for opening day. The Building & House Committee has task lists ready.  If you want a head start or details, call Joe Coons at 739-1528.
FRIDAY-SUNDAY IS THE ROCHE HARBOR CRUISE. Ahoy, fellow BYC cruisers! If you haven't confirmed your reservation to attend the Roche Harbor Cruise next weekend, it's not too late.  Please email me (my email is at the "here" link below) with your boat information ASAP so I can forward your slip request onto the Harbormaster.  So far we have 12 boats confirmed.
With our cruise to Roche Harbor less than a week away, we thought we'd send out an itinerary of events planned and meal suggestions for the weekend. It's here. Also, when you arrive in Roche Harbor, please check in at the Harbormaster's office to pay for your slip.
We can't wait to get the 2014  cruising season started! We are excited to get to know new boating friends and explore our beautiful San Juan Islands together! ---Angie
NEW ROSTER PAGES ARE AT THE CLUB: Check your Roster to see if you need a new page 23; all Rosters need photo pages 7-10. They're at the badge desk.
ROOM RENTAL FEES: The Board adopted a new fee schedule in March. The intent of the new pricing is to treat all members and non-members fairly and equitably and to allow for rates based upon type and length of use. The rates have also been adjusted to reflect the value of our asset. Many of the fees for member use have remained free of charge or are minimal.
The new fees take affect April 1, 2014. An updated member use brochure will be ready this week and posted on the website. Copies will also be available in the clubhouse.  --- Commodore Michele Bodtke
THE NEXT EDUCATION PROGRAM is April 16, Wednesday.  We'll have a group of the best pros around to answer all your boat-Maintenance questions in every category.
SCHOONER ZODIAC CRUISE -- Please join us on the windjammer Zodiac on Saturday, April 19, for a cruise out in Bellingham Bay.  The proceeds from this event will be used to upgrade the dinghy fleet for the not-for-profit Youth Sailing Lesson Program.  What a great way to spend a day with family and friends and support Youth Sailing!!  There's plenty of room available...Go to for more information and to sign up for this event.
TUESDAY APRIL 22, from 6-9 pm, Washington Divers are hosting a Community Education Seminar at the BYC about Sea Star Wasting Syndrome, which is happening all along our coastline and affects boaters and divers alike, as well as anyone who is concerned about the coastal environment. A professor at WWU just got a grant to study this and find out why it is happening. The seminar will be held in the (NEW!) Ward Room and will be free and open to the public. More details here.

MEMBERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES BEGIN APRIL 26! We will be running a membership special during the week of April 26 through May 3, featuring a 50% discounted initiation fee! Invite your friends to join as we launch into another boating season. (Fine print: To get the discount, applications must come in during that week only, accompanied by the payment, a check, completed ACH form, or credit card payment at the bar only. Active membership is $355 and Non-resident is $295.)
Bring your friends and guests to stop by the club that week to have a look around and meet us; we'll open Monday & Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, and our regular hours Wednesday-Saturday!
First, thanks to all who helped with last Friday’s Wine Tasting event! It was a huge success, and our visitors from Anacortes had a great time, also! This week we’re adding a third night of food service (spell that “cheap eats”) in the lounge.
Wednesday: Burgers and Brats, starting at 5 and continuing on for the sail racing crews.
Thursday: Don’t miss Monica’s carne asada, fresh from the grill, with salsas and refrieds to die for!
Friday: STEAK NITE! We’re kicking it up another notch with Filet Mignon cooked to order, bakers and salad! And all for a paltry $10! Service starts at 5, so come early – when it’s gone, it’s gone! May I suggest pairing that steak with a smooth Cabernet or a spicy Malbec from our full service bar?
See you at the club! --- Steve Hayward

DISTANCE CRUISE TO DESOLATION SOUND! We have hosts for the Desolation Sound Cruise in September, Richard & Leona Hanset. "Rich & Lee", are non-resident members from California and spend their summers up here cruising the San Juans and Gulf Islands.  They have been on numerous trips to Desolation Sound and have extensive cruising experience in leading and cruise hosting & planning.
Rich has a tentative plan for this cruise which has been extended to 16 days. It includes stops at: Secret Cove, Squirrel Cove, Prideaux Haven, Big Bay, Cordero Lodge, Blind Bay, Campbell River, Comox, Nanaimo, Telegraph Harbor and Todd Inlet (Butchart Gardens).  Rich and Lee have previously visited  all of the venues/ports on the suggested route several times.  The proposed dates of the cruise are September 14th-29th.  Jim & I are going to be the co-hosts for this cruise and this will be our first trip to Desolation Sound, so we're excited to have you join us.
Please let us know now your interest in attending this distance cruise so we can begin to plan for the cruise more extensively! Send me an email if you are even remotely interested, so that you can be included in the design of what is sure to be an amazing cruise! Angie Santosuosso
Wednesday races this week!  What more to say?
I hope all of you have caught the excitement generated by the lower clubhouse remodel. It's going to be a beautiful functional space and one we can all be proud of. I can't begin to thank all the folks that have donated thousands of hours helping. I feel so very grateful to be part of such a generous group - thank you all, truly!
I was also struck this weekend with the realization that Opening Day is right around the corner! I'm so looking forward to kicking-off the season. You should have received your invitation via email this weekend. We have some wonderful surprises in the works for the day. Get your "Land of Oz" boats decorated and join in the fun.
Last Friday AYC visited the club for their spring shakedown cruise. The two clubs shared in F@5 appetizers, and wine and beer tasting was enjoyed by many. There were about 100 attending between the two clubs, it was wonderful! Thank you Missy Steffen and Steve Hayward for your help with the event.
If you are cruising to Roche Harbor this weekend, have a safe and wonderful time. If not, please join us Saturday for our semi-annual club scrub, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Pizza and beer provided by the club. Hope to see you there.  ---- Serving you from the Helm, Michele Bodtke, Commodore

Last week's picture was of Bomba's Party Shack on the north shore of Tortola Island, BVI. Correct identifications were sent by Ken Ford, Jose Bartlett, Jim Gibson, Mark Harding, and John Van Haalen. At certain times of day, it can get pretty lively, although it was rather quiet when Meredith Ross took her picture.
This week's picture was not taken in the Caribbean. If you know the location, send your answer to
