Halloween at the BYC

Another successful Halloween party and much fun was had by all!!  A real big thanks to Nicole Jordan & Johnny "Comenormous" Knowles and his tireless family for setting up the great decorations! Steve "Chainsaw & Hockey Mask Jason" Hayward & Scott "4 cheeks" McEniry joined in with their clever costumes behind the bar. (Steve said Monica wouldn't let him use the new chainsaw he got her for her 50th as part of his costume...) With tasty "Bloodys Brains" and even tastier "Zombies" flowing from behind the bar (that were a hit thanks to Scott), the costume contest soon followed. There was a tie for 1st in the kids contest with Maxwell Day significantly more thrilled about the small boatload of candy that he won than...well..his folks. ;) Susan Henderson's friend wore a convincing "Uma Thurman" outfit from Pulp Fiction for a worthy mention of 4th place. Guest Valerie Wright got 3rd for a well put together Logger outfit.  Our own Adam & Nicole Jordan pulled a 2nd as Darth Vader and a female Pharaoh, and guests Kevin & Deb Wright pulled off the grand prize with their very well put together "Ooga Booga, and Ugga Bugga" Cave Couple outfits after 5 yrs of waiting to use them! Cheers to everyone that made it fun!! -- Rick "R. Mortis" Laursen

This weekend, Mike Allsop’s LaSiesta, and many proud parents from around the country, watched the top high school sailors in the nation compete. Eight races were completed in each fleet on Sunday for a total of 10 weekend races. In the Laser-Full fleet Patrick Shanahan is the ISSA Cressy Full Rig National Champion. In the Laser-Radial fleet Nic Baird is the ISSA Cressy Radial National Champion. A big thanks to our Bellingham Yacht Club, spectator boat skipper Mike Allsop, Whatcom Sailing, and regatta chair Scott Wilson. And, thanks to Laser Performance for supplying 36 brand new Lasers. --Trustee Jim Gibson

ATTENTION SAILORS!!   We're seeking possible interest in a June Flotilla geared toward sailboats (powerboats are welcome too!).   This is a 3 to 4 week cruise (you can participate for any length of time as it fits you)  heading into Canadian waters beginning around June 10th.
We need your feedback.   We plan to survey interested parties with questions regarding destinations, time on shore, length of hours on the water, activities, etc.   This is a flotilla designed to satisfy the majority interests of those that attend.
FIRST......we need to hear from you.    If you have any interest at all, let us hear from you!  Please send notice of interest to either: Marian Welsh ( or Dean Altschuler (  Thanks!
What a great Weekend...  The BYC hosted the nation’s top 36 High School Sailors at the ISSA National Single Handed (Laser) Championship on Bellingham Bay.  I had the opportunity to talk with some of the sailors and their parents, who all gave high praise to our club and the venue.  Congratulations to Shorecrest Preparatory School of St. Petersburg, FL for winning both the Laser-Full and Laser-Radial divisions.
Next up this weekend is the ICSA National Single Handed Championships featuring the top 36 College Laser Sailors including Bellingham’s Robin Lesh sailing for M.I.T.   You can check out the action from ashore or from one of several spectator boats.
BYC Youth Fleet needs your Support!!!
You’ll soon be seeing signs and posters around the club for the 2014-2015 Youth Sailing Fundraising Campaign.   This year’s goal is $20,000 for the purchase of new Opti’s and Lasers sailboats.  The campaign will include BYC events such as Dinner/Silent Auction and Schooner Zodiac Cruise, as well as community outreach through individual and corporate tax deductible donations.  As with nearly all youth sports, fundraising for Youth Sailing is a necessity to keep costs down and accessible to all youths of Bellingham & Whatcom County.  The official kick-off will be on Friday, November 21st with a $10 Salmon BBQ Dinner. BYC Members, Allsop, Hodges &  Bornstein are generously providing the fish and their culinary skills and giving 100% of the proceeds to youth sailing.  More details will follow.  Youth Fleet Captain & Professional Sports Photographer, Mike Powell will be showing his photos of the recent ISSA & ICSA Championships.
Remember… it’s a Friday’s @ 5 this week (back to back following the blue moon F@5).  The ICSA College Sailors will be around and Monica will be cooking up burgers.   Come down to the club and join the excitement!!!
Next week I hope to provide a preview of the Social Events and Boating Education calendars.  Cheers -- Commodore Knowles
Last week's photo was taken at Le Écluse de la Place on the Briare Canal in central France. Jamie Foti & Jim Schoenecker were both close in their answers.
This week we escape Bellingham's rain and travel to a sunnier place. If you know the location, send your answer to
