Reciprocity is a valuable membership benefit...
Aloha, members! Neil and I just returned from a week in Oahu with fellow members, Fleet Captain Michele Bodtke and her husband Bart, and new members, Dale and Shasonta Delmage. It was a great week of sun, a few tropical storms, lots of golf, some unbelievable garlic shrimp, and a very memorable afternoon spent at the Waikiki Yacht Club. Here’s a little packing tip for you… don’t forget to take along your BYC membership card! After signing in, we were buzzed thru the door and warmly welcomed by their bartender on duty. He walked us over to a big table near the big screen TV and happily found the hockey game for Dale. The game didn’t go Dale’s way, but the sting of the loss was softened a bit by our amazing surroundings… warm tropical breezes blowing thru the open-air bar and looking out over the marina. There are so many burgees on display that they have a book at the bar that has every one of them categorized and even a dedicated burgee committee! Michele and Bart had been there last year and noticed how faded our poor BYC burgee had become, so we had packed along a new one that we presented to the bartender. So if you find yourself in Honolulu, check out the Waikiki Yacht Club and give a little salute to the BYC colors!
Town Hall Meeting this Friday...
This week your Board will meet on Thursday and our next Town Hall Meeting will be Friday evening. We’ll get the meeting started at 6, so please come and have your voice heard. A few possible topics can be: volunteerism, dues for next year, and summer activity ideas. I look forward to seeing you there!!
At your service, Commodore Michele

HAVE A GREAT TIUME ON FATHER'S DAY...BUT NOT AT THE CLUB!+
Contrary to the rumor that our empty-headed Editor ran last week, there will be no Father's Day Buffet at the Club this Saturday.
Don't come. It will not happen!

FURNITURE FUNDS COMING IN...
The fund drive for our new outdoor furniture is underway (it will be here around June 28th) and the first funds are coming in. "We wanted to get this before the summer was gone", says Joe Coons, leading the fund-raising. "If all of us pitch in a little, it should be easy!"
The new furnishings will include 16 chairs and four round tables, all high-quality, substantial, powder-coated steel. The chairs seats are comfortable, contoured steel mesh and the table tops are mesh as well, making for simple "wipe-it off, hose it off" cleaning...in fact, an ordinary rainfall should keep it nice unless a giant gull has come by with a deposit. The committee reviewed offerings at Costco, Macy's, The Greenhouse, and other sources before settling on commercial-grade items from our restaurant equipment supplier in Mt. Vernon.
Mike Welsh, BYC Assistant Treasurer, has received the first few checks (send them to Treasurer, Bellingham Yacht Club, 2625 S. Harbor Loop, Bellingham, WA 98225) and you can also conveniently contribute via cash, check, or credit card at the bar. A sign-up sheet at the bar lets you note how your gift is to be recognized on a plaque that will be mounted on the deck between the doors; all gifts of $20 or more will be recognized. THANK YOU!

ANOTHER PACRIM PERSPECTIVE...
"But I’m A Power Boater!"
While manning the grill at the well-attended Pacrim Friday’s at 5 two weeks ago, serving up succulent steaks and mouthwatering "shrimp from the barbi", a club member came up and said “I would love to go, but I’m a power boater.”
“No worries Mate,” was my Australian reply, “because you can participate as an ambassador.” Ambassadors get to do all of the fun stuff while the sailors race on the water. Ambassadors get to go to wine tastings, beach parties, barbeques etc.. Racers need to maintain a level of seriousness throughout the day because they are racing, but ambassadors can let it all hang out. They get to party with participants from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Russia.
The Bellingham Sister Cities Organization in conjunction with the Bellingham Yacht Club wants you to fill out an application. Come with us to Port Stephens Australia for the 2012 Pacific Rim Challenge. The event will take place next March, when the average temperature is 80 degrees. We need both sailors and power boaters for racer and ambassador positions. Whether you choose to race or represent as an ambassador or as a racer, you are guaranteed to have the time of your life. The deadline to fill out an application is June 24th! You can e-mail Karen Callery for more information at firstname.lastname@example.org. --- Mike Poulos
