BOAT SHOW OR BUST

30+ folks enjoyed a fun-filled trip to the Seattle Boat Show on Saturday. Thanks to FC Donna Olsen for organizing; to bartenders RC Neil Bennett and VC Mick Corcoran; to Commodore Jon for the great breakfast sandwiches; and to all the other behind-the-scene volunteers that made the day possible.  If you've never ridden the bus before, I highly recommend it!! --Editor.
Click here for Donna's report and a full list of 'thank you's'.

For questions, contact one of the following Super Bowl Party Hosts: James Santosuosso (360) 927-4844; Neil Bennett (206) 919-0371; Missy Steffen (360) 661-7350

Come compete for the coveted 'Silver Ladle' trophy!  Read all the rules here, but basically you need to be able to make a kicking good Chili that knocks the socks off of the tasters and the judges. --RC Neil Bennett

I received a note from Steve Travis (many of you know him as the owner of the 1D 48 'Flash') letting me know that his mother, Margaret Travis - a longtime BYC member - passed away on Sunday, 25 January.
"Mom went into the hospital Friday evening and waited for all of us to get with her. We spent some time talking, she said goodbye and went to sleep.
The Bellingham Yacht Club was a large part of their lives until she moved to Mercer Island. I would just like to say thank you to all of my Mom and Dad's friends for all the years they were members." --Editor

MEMBER UPDATE
Phil Dyer visited PC Chuck McCord and his wife, Roberta this week.  Sadly, there isn't much positive news to report.  Please continue to keep these long-standing, hard-working members in your prayers.  --Editor

BAR MANAGER'S CORNER

Last Friday’s Steak Nite was a big success, with 56 tender and juicy filets served, thanks to the efforts of Missy Steffan, Mick Cocoran and others too numerous to mention! Thanks to all! And stay tuned for the next Steak Nite on Valentine’s Eve, Friday the 13th of February!

Here’s the schedule for this week:

WED: Soup Nite, featuring Dick’s Special Turkey and Whatever Soup

THUR: Monica’s Mexican Cantina with carne asada hot off the grill and those tasty bean burritos.

FRI:  Friday @ 5, so bring those appetizers and sides to share, and maybe throw something on the grill!

SAT: Bar and lounge open for your lounging and visiting pleasure.

SUN: Super Bowl Party. This promises to be a smash, so come early and stay late so you don’t miss any of the festivities.

See you in the lounge! --Steve

SAIL FLEET NEWS
There will be a Sail Fleet meeting on Wednesday, February 11th at 6:00 PM at the Club to present the schedule and discuss the 2015 sailing program.

The PHRF-NW 2015 Annual General Meeting was held on Sunday at CYC-Seattle and was attended by myself and Director Dave Steffen ('Tequila' Dave).  The outcomes of this meeting are not tsunami-generating, but they do harken a change in the approach PHRF will be making to generating and hearing appeals.
To do so, the NW PHRF-NW Region (Anacortes and North/West) will strive to hold open Regional subcouncil meetings to talk about the process and do's and don'ts of appeals and issues observed on the race course. Look for announcements of the first one to be held here at the BYC.
In the meantime:  Please remember to report those new sails you bought at the boatshow; remeasure your old sails-they may have shrunk and could gain you a second or three on your handicap; and lastly, PHRF-NW is NOT enforcing the previously announced Fat Head Main measurement formula as described on Page 19, L.2 of the Handbook. --RC Neil Bennett, BYC Handicapper
YOUTH FLEET NEWS
Mark Your Calendars!!
April 24th 2015 will be the date for our annual Youth Fleet Silent Auction night. The event was well attended last year and raised enough funds to fully repair one of the BYC RIB's.
As all boat owners are well aware there is always something else demanding attention and funds. This year we are building our fleet by purchasing lightly used Opti's and Lasers.
These boats will be the foundation for both our advanced learn to sail program and the BYC race team. The race team will be competing at every regatta in the Northwest in 2015 and we are also looking to put a large trailer together so we can haul sail and coach boats to the races.
If you have any items you would like to donate or contacts to a business that might donate product, services or gift certificates please get in touch with me at mike@mikepowellphoto.com
Thank you again for your help.  --Trustee Mike Powell
CRUISING NEWS

"It's all about cruising!" March 6

Come for the Friday at 5 on March 6 and stick around for dinner served up by your cruising committee. We're serving a pasta bar, sautéed veggies and salad.  After dinner, we'll tell you all about the great cruising destinations we have planned and also share our new improved website with you.

Inati Bay Raft Up and Progressive Dinner March 14 and 15

Registration is now open for our first cruise of the season to Inati Bay on March 14 and 15. We are planning to raft up in beautiful Inati Bay and have a potluck-style progressive dinner on Saturday night with a St. Patrick's Day Irish theme. The progressive dinner will include appetizers, dinner and dessert with each being served on a different boat. Then on Sunday morning, breakfast will be served. We're looking for help with this event, so if you can volunteer your boat to host part of the progressive dinner please let us know.

New this year, you can register on the website and you'll be able to see who has already registered as well. Here's the link: http://cruising.byc.org/2015-byc-cruise-registration-forms/

As always, you can go to the cruising website at http://cruising.byc.org/ for a complete cruising calendar and details on each cruise. Get them on your calendar now so you don't miss out on the fun!

COMMODORE'S COLUMN
I’ll let you all onto a little Club secret….  The BYC Friday Steak Night is an Amazing Deal!!!    The first Steak Night of the year was last Friday and hosted by BYC Trustee and House Events Chair Missy Steffen, Bar Manager Steve Hayward, and VC and former broiler chef, Mick Corcoran on the Grill.   It was a sellout event with over 50 steaks sold.   The $15 meal included a premium Filet Mignon, baked potato with all the fixings and a Goat Cheese & Spinach salad.  BYC Steak Nights are on the 2nd Friday of each month.  The next one is on Feb 13th with a Valentine Theme.  Watch the Jib Sheet for signups and make sure you reserve ahead.      This is great event to show off our club to guests and potential new members.
Thanks to the 30 members who went on the BYC Seattle Boat Show bus last weekend.  And special thanks FC Donna Olsen for organizing this years event.   It was a fun time and opportunity to visit club member businesses that had booths at the show. (See Photos)  Also, I had some good conversations with our Seattle area reciprocal clubs. I’ll be posting some of their events which they invited BYC Members to come join.
20% off Boat Show Membership Special
We have already received two new applications, both were guests on the BYC Boat Show Bus.  Please spread the word about the Membership Special.  AND A BONUS: BYC Members will receive $25 in Account Credit for bringing in a new Member during the promotion.
Some things your Board is working on…  RC/Treasurer Neil Bennett is putting the framework together for a Strategic Plan to look at where and how we take the Club in the future.   The BYC has signed a monthly lease with the Port of Bellingham for 1000 sqft of indoor/winter storage for Club Boats in the Lignin Building at the GP Site.  If you are interested in knowing more about this indoor boat storage, please contact me.   The Building & Maintenance Committee is getting ready to remodel the downstairs bathrooms and showers.  If you have design or construction skills to offer, please contact Gary Smith.
Hope to see you all at the BYC Seahawks Super Bowl Party & Chili Cook-Off this Sunday.  The Steak Dinner + Squares Game is sold out; however, you can still purchase the dinner separately.  --Commodore Jonathan
THIS WEEK'S PHOTO CONTEST:
Mark Tavelli correctly identified the Clay Shaw Memorial Bridge, which spans the Intracoastal Waterway in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Rob McArdle identified a similar bridge not too far away.

This week we see a lighthouse standing guard over a rocky area. If you know the location, send your answer to drsteveross@gmail.com.
