NOMINATING MEETING THIS WEEK!  There will be the Annual BYC Nominating Meeting this Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Club. See Commodore Jody's column below, and try to be there to be informed about your Club's leadership...
FRIDAY AT FIVE THIS WEEK! There will be a free BBQ!  As this year's Youth Sailing Program wraps up, we are kicking off 2014 Youth Sailing Planning & Organization at the September 6th F@5. Youth Fleet Captain John Stocklass and Rear Commodore Jonathan Knowles will be your hosts serving up Burgers, Dogs and Hot Fudge Sundaes. Please bring a side dish. Whether you have a young adult in BYC's Youth programs or are just interested in helping out with them, now is the time to get involved! We have big ideas to expand our programs that include new dinghy and sport boat fleets, expanded Opti & FJ BYC Youth Racing Team, Winter & shore-side youth/family events such as Zodiac sailing, movie nights, family sailing days, BBQ's and Inati Bay outings, J24 Youth Racing, Youth activity room remodel and more. There are many levels of commitment from small to serious: serve as a Trustee on the BYC Board or Youth Sailing Committee, help with Youth Racing & Regattas, Learn-to-Sail Program, marketing,  boat repairs, fundraising and Youth/Family event planning.
Bring your Youth Sailors, Family and guests to this BYC Free Event and learn about your opportunities for fun and service!
LOST:  We lost a burgundy double dog leash with brass clips at the Buccaneer party. We left it in one of the dingy's during treasure hunt.  We would love to have it again! Thanks,
John Perry, jeperry@nas.com, 360-739-1714

TASK TEAM REPORT:  We had our first Task Team Project this week, to clear some stuff from the furnace room at the Club.  Thanks to Mark Harding and Bob Simica for pitching in on Friday, 8/30, and getting it done; Ron Erickson would have been there,l to, except for a schedule conflict.  Also, Caron Maeconis and Dean Altschuler have signed up since last week. Thank You! Would you like to know more about this way to help our Club? Read here!

RACING NEWS: THANKS TO EVERYONE who has spent their Wednesday evenings for the last 5 months giving the BYC another year of Wednesday night racing, especially the Race Committee Volunteers. Our racing program could not have happened without the generosity of Bob Snowball offering his boat and Randy Nulle's dedicated coordination of the race committee.  The volunteer bartenders and burger flippers added to the success as did the official cookie baker of Wednesday night racing, Tierney Owens.
We will shift gears now to enjoy some weekend races. This Saturday will be the Commodores cup will deliver racers to the festivities at Inati Bay, and the Marmetta Cup is looming at the end of the month on September 28th.  Get your crews together and well see you on the water for some fall racing!  Thanks everyone!!! Bart Maupin
THE HIGH SCHOOL SAILING TEAM is about to start its 5th year this fall with kids from Squalicum, Sehome and Bellingham High Schools.  This fall the team will have routine practices out at Lake Whatcom and compete in 6 regattas around the northwest including the Dale Jepson One Design regatta.  The team will also be hosting the Northwest Interscholastic Sailing Association’s Singlehanded Championships on September 21st and 22nd at the Bellingham Yacht Club.  In this event the kids will be racing Lasers with the winners qualifying for Nationals in November.  The team is excited for a great fall season.
If you know anyone who might be interested in joining the high school sailing team, have them contact Scott Wilson (360.303.1759) for more information.  Or visit our website at www.whatcomsailing.com.

DALE JEPSON ONE DESIGN REGATTA IS 1.5 WEEKS AWAY!  It's a really great event with sailors coming from all over the Northwest to participate.  This year, it’s September 14 & 15. We could use your help:
-  If you have a whaler, 15' or larger RIB or another low profile boat that could be used to rescue sailors/boats, please let me know.  We have lots of young folks on the water and it would be nice to be able to keep them safe.
-  If you have some time to help on the weekend with meal prep and/ or registration, please let me know.  We would love to have you out.
-  We could use people at the docks to help boats in and out of the water.
-  We could use help making a Caesar Salad and scooping the pulled pork.
-  We could use people to watch the kegs to keep our liquor license safe.
This regatta is run on the cheap.  We have consistently been in the black, and I am hoping this year will be no different.  Please step up to help us on one or both days.  Reach me at 676-4263, or email at byclaserfleet@yahoo.comI'll ask again... PLEASE step up to help us this year.  We could really use it, and if not for the volunteer effort, we will not be able to put on events like this.
Thanks very much in advance.  Let’s make this another fantastic event. --- Mike Poulos, Chair BBOD
GET YOUR RESERVATION IN FOR POET'S COVE! Once again John Gargett is chairing this annual cruising event.  It gets bigger each year, and is FUN! This year's details are here. Register early for this popular excursion. This is a great cruise...

BURGER SPECIAL CONTINUES: Our Wednesday Weekly Racing & Burger Night has continued to be a success and a fun evening at the club. In addition to our cheeseburgers, we will be offering vegetarian black bean burgers for our Club's non-meat eaters. Carnivore or not, come on down and enjoy a tasty burger and beverage this Wednesday! Also, if you'd like to get involved with grilling, please contact Matt Ouilette at m.ouilette@gmail.com

FROM THE COMMODORE:
Wow, what a nice weekend. The PITCH Regatta was a hit! The Vonvettas rocked it on Friday night and the sun and wind seemed to cooperate with ease. Everyone had a wonderful weekend and the Food on Saturday night was grand. Special thanks go to Randy Nulle and his PITCH Committee for putting on such a wonderful Regatta. Special thanks go to the Dead Pirates as well, for cooking up some of the best Tri Tip I have ever eaten! Thanks to all who contributed to this wonderful event and all the sponsors who helped make it happen.
Saturday Sept 7th is the Commodores Picnic and Crab Fest at Inati Bay. If you need a ride please contact me or Mick Corcoran. There will be plenty of folks going over and we can get you a ride. Of course the Commodores Cup will be the race to the venue going over and I hear there are some special ways to earn minutes in winning that race! We will have horse shoes and bocce ball at the Bay and of course delicious food and grog for everyone. I am trying to order up another beautiful sunny day! Bring your crab pots and crab cookers! Mick Corcoran needs some volunteers to help organize this event. If you can help please come to the Meeting Wed Sept 4 @ 5:30 pm just prior to the Nominations and Elections!
PC Jack Black is going to be in town with his lovely wife Lisa….I know those of you who remember Jack and Lisa will want to be sure to show up and have some fun with this special Past Commodore and his wife. I personally cannot wait! Welcome home Jack, Lisa and family!
The other major event coming up this week is the Nominations Night on Wednesday at 6:00 pm. The committee will be accepting nominations from the floor for all trustee and officer positions.  Do you know someone willing to run? Nominate them from the floor on Wednesday night and get them on the Ballot. Check your By-laws, in order to run for an Officer position you need to have served 24 months (2 years) as a trustee; in order to run as Fleet Captain you must have served at least 12 months (1Yr) as a trustee, and for the Trustee positions, you must be a voting member in good standing. Don’t be afraid to step up and join the leadership in the Bellingham Yacht Club. We need strong leadership and support for our club. Get involved and make a difference!
I hope to see all of you at the Commodores Picnic and Crab Fest on Saturday Sept 7th…..Enjoy the sunshine while we have it.
