The BYC election for our new program year was held on Wednesday, September 19, and approximately 75 ballots were cast. Here are our 2012/13 Flag Officers and Board of Trustees (note that the Immediate Past Commodore and the Second Year Trustees are not newly elected positions):
Flag Officers: Commodore: Jody Erickson
; Vice Commodore: Michele Bodtke

; and Immediate Past Commodore: Troy Curran.
First Year Trustees: Neil Bennett, John Gargett, Angie Santosuosso, and Mark Schmerler

In true BYC fashion, many members came down to the club and took advantage of the opportunity to socialize while the votes were being tallied by our teller committee. And nearly 50 people enjoyed the great New York steak dinner complete with all the “fixins” arranged and prepared by Jonathan Knowles, Mark Santosuosso and Katy Day, Bob “Cooky” Kehoe, and Sue Day
. Thank you!

. Thanks to all of these who made the process go so smoothly. --- Marian Welsh
NEXT WEEK: INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS
If you’ve never been to one of these ceremonies, come on down to the Club for a special and sentimental time.
Beginning at 6:00 p.m. next Wednesday, October 3, the BYC Blue Gavel/Past Commodores organization takes responsibility for swearing in our new officers and trustees. PC Joe Coons
, who has served as MC of the event for many years, always includes a brief history story in the presentations…and it’s also a time when new Past Commodore Troy Curran
may present some special awards, and our incoming Commodore Jody Erickson
, will tell you some of her plans for the year.
Of course, the bar is open, but primarily it’s a time to honor all these Members who give their time to make the Club work. And we’re hoping that ALL the incoming officers and board, and also those that are carrying on in old jobs will be on hand as the torch is passed. See you there!
(For those involved in the ceremonies, suggested dress is a blue jacket with grey slacks and white shirt if possible. You can find hints about many BYC events in your Roster, section 1B, page 10.)
SAILING REPORT: RACE THIS WEEK!
This Saturday the 29th, the Marmetta Cup will take sailors on a lap of the bay with the finish a bit closer to home. There will be a Skippers meeting at 9am at Gate 3. Hopefully we can enjoy one more weekend of sunshine on the bay.
Last Weekend's ABC Challenge pitted BYC and CYC sailors against Anacortes Yacht Club sailors as they battled flukey winds and Currents on the course stretching to Blakely Island. Bellingham Boats were lucky to start in a steady breeze while Anacortes Boats were delayed until they found a suitable place to start with a breeze. Todd Koetje is thankfully working on computing the results. --- Bart Maupin, Sail Fleet Captain
THESE GUYS ARE ON TOP OF IT!
We had a very productive roof work party this past Saturday. After giving the roof a good sweeping we focused on repairing some failing torchdown seams as well as piping the condensation drains into the roof scuppers.
Many thanks to Don Jorgenson, Terry Tevelli, Tim Mumford, Shawn Thompson, John Stockless, Larry Jones, and Phil with his forklift
which made life easy removing all the debris. --- Mark Santosuosso, Building & House Chairman
BYC YOUTH SAILING AUXILIARY BEING FORMED
“Building BYC Youth and Families”
We are looking for BYC Youth, Parents, Grandparents, and anyone interested in joining the new “BYC Youth Sailing Auxiliary”. Although the exact mission of this committee is still to be determined, the general outline will be to promote and engage BYC’s youth and their family members through events, programs and fundraising activities. Some goals will include targeted fundraising campaigns for the purchase of new boats, remodeling the junior room, subsidized race traveling costs and youth sailing scholarships. And we want to find hosts for events such as special sailing clinics, family sails on the Zodiac, movie nights, youth dances/parties, etc.
The format of this committee will be like that of a School PTA, with its own president and organizational structure. This committee will work closely with the Youth Sailing Fleet Captain, the Youth Sailing Program Director and the Bellingham Sailing Foundation.
There are Jobs for Everyone! Large jobs to small tasks, long term and short term that will fit every life and time commitments. We’ll need community & business leaders, those with organizational skills, fundraising specialists, and anyone that can donate a few hours of their time.
If you’re interested in being involved or recommend someone, please contact Jonathan & Ann Knowles, at firstname.lastname@example.org or, Teresa Werner, email@example.com.
MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL EVERY WEEK DURING THE SEASON!
Don't forget it’s also Taco Mondays! Three Tacos and a Tasty Beverage Special for $6.50 or $1 tacos!
And if you didn't think all of the above was enough fun- There's a chance to win $25 on the Football Squares Game board. Look for the game board to be at the club All week long to sign up for a square (or several) and enter to win!
If you have any questions contact Matt & Heather Ouilette and Eric Nyberg
YOUR RESPONSE IS REALLY NEEDED!
Jody Erickson is making up Committee assignments and would really like everyone to submit the committees in which they are interested in participating!
All Past Commodores can get a sign up sheet at the Club (by mistake, they weren’t sent one).
There are also extra sign up sheets for anyone that may have misplaced theirs; they are on the shoreside end of the bar. There is a blue chart box on the bar to put them in when filled out. Jody will be checking it regularly.
The sign up sheet also has several new events on the back that folks may be interested in! Get those blue sheets in to Commodore Elect Jody so we can get our 2012-2013 Committees organized!
You can drop them off at the club or mail them in, or you can email your choices to firstname.lastname@example.org.
DECORATING COMMITTEE MEETING
There is going to be a Commodores Ball Decoration Committee Meeting, Tuesday Sept 25 at 6:30 at the club (after the Cook Book Committee Meeting). We need help! Come one come all! :)

JOHN GARGETT REPORTS ON THE POETS COVE TRIP:
On September 14, 15 & 16, the Bellingham Yacht Club held its 8th Annual trip to Poets Cove and wrapped up the formal Cruise season for 2012. Poets Cove represents the end of the summer and summer was kind this year as we enjoyed great warm weather, beautiful sun, calm winds and great friends. This trip is held in the tradition of celebrating the end of the season.
This year we enjoyed a great Friday evening dock party, followed by a fantastic dinner cooked by Jim & Angie Santosuosso who prepared a homemade Spaghetti sauce and Ravioli along with garlic bread, garden salad and cheesecake for dessert. With the weather providing a golden sunset, and everyone chipping in, it was a night to remember.
On Saturday, again under sunny skies, hiking was in order for most of us. Nine of us hiked up Mt. Norman and were treated to spectacular views of the Canadian Islands, to Victoria, to the Olympic Mountains. The hike up is well worth it!
Another group hiked into the Enchanted Forest, a lush valley of northwest vegetation just about a mile from Poets Cove. A third group helped Commodore Curran and Cory repair a dock on Julia Island.
Saturday evening Poets Cove Resort and Spa prepared another fantastic meal for us and everyone from the club had to wear a hat to the dinner. Not only did everyone wear a hat, everyone got to tell a story about their hat, and some of the stories were quite good! Finally, we had a photo contest and the winner was Melanie Cloutier who captured a mature buck ignoring the “Do Not Climb On The Wall” sign and was sticking his nose out as he entered the spa.
Sunday is the traditional day for everyone to head home, and for the most part everyone did, but five boats did stay until Monday just because the weather was so good. It was a great trip. --- John Gargett
