A Seaworthy Intro to Silk Painting

In this class you will learn to paint with silk colors on silk stretched hoops. Its fun and easy for all skill levels. We will use Gutta, a glue like resist, to draw a design onto the silk using a themed stencil. Then we will brush on the silk dyes and watch the colors flow. We will cover proper application of the resist, painting and mixing dyes, watercolor and salt techniques, and more. All supplies provided and you will leave with a completed piece of seaworthy art.

EDUCATION CORNER

Rules of the Road, the third installment in the increasingly popular Seamanship Series, is coming up on March 16 at 7pm

 

This two-hour seminar/talk will focus on the International Rules of the Road which regulate all boating on our local waters. You will learn not only what the rules say, but also what they mean, and how they apply to your boat, including:  

  • Avoiding Collisions, Your Responsibilities
  • Crossing and Overtaking Vessels
  • Sailing Vessels
  • Fishing Vessels
  • Lights and Shapes Required
  • Sound Signals & Restricted Visibility

CRUISE FLEET NEWS

Cruising News

 

Thank you to everyone who came to our Kickoff event.  If you missed it, be sure to check out the cruising calendar on the BYC website and pick up a Save-The-Date card the next time you are at the club so you can get the cruises on your calendar.

 

Shakedown Cruise to Anacortes

Our first cruise is April 22-24 at Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes and is a joint cruise with the Bellingham and Friday Harbor Power Squadrons.  Friday night there will be a Docktail Party at the dock and Saturday night we will be having dinner at the Majestic where we will feast on fresh local products brought from the farm to our table and prepared by master chefs, and enjoy northwest wines and local microbrews.  (Space at the Majestic is somewhat limited so sign up early.)  This will be a great start to the cruising season and a chance to make new friends.  Register now at cruising.byc.org.  Hosted by Chris and Vickie Olson.

 

Memorial Day "Blue Hawaii" Cruise to Fisherman's Bay

Next, we're heading to Lopez Island on May 27-30 along with our friends at the Corinthian Yacht Club.  Our hosts, Guy and Barbara Thieman, have a lot of fun activities planned with the theme of "Blue Hawaii", the famous Elvis Presley movie.  There will be great food & games all weekend long and karaoke as well as everything Lopez has to offer so you won't want to miss it.  Register now at byc.cruising.org.

 

Host Needed

A host is needed for the Adventure Cruise to Prevost Harbor August 5-7.  Also, is anyone interested in hosting a long distance cruise?  The Adventure Cruise would be a perfect launching point for a cruise to points north.  If you are interested, email Vickie Olson at olsonvj@aol.com.

Pre-Season Kick-Off

The BYC Sail Fleet "Burger & Pint" Pre-Season Kick-Off meeting will be on Wednesday March 30th - 6 PM at the BYC Clubhouse.  Sail Fleet Captain Jonathan Knowles along with Race Committee Chair John Pedlow will be provide an overview of the upcoming race season, handing out the Sailing Instructions, registering boats and answer questions.  PHRF Fleet Captain Bart Maupin will go over the long distance race schedule.  The registration fee is flat $50 for all series and long distance racing.   Register now so you can take advantage of the full race schedule even if you think can make a couple races.
 
Free Burgers courtesy of the BYC Sail Fleet & Cheap Pints provided by Stones Throw Brewery.   Brewery owners and fellow local racers, Tony Luciano & Jack Pflueger will be handing out brewery swag.

The 5O5 North American Championships are Right Around the Corner

Greetings membership.  Time is flying, and we are already knocking on the door of boating season.  It's going to be a fantastic summer, with loads of great events at the club.  One of those fantastic events is the 5O5 North American Championships.  This will be held June 2 though 5.  We already have 31 boats signed up from all over the country.  This is an excellent opportunity to raise our stature in the country. 

We really need help to pull this off right, and on budget.  We could hire caterers, janitors, dock workers, etc. etc.., but that would seriously diminish the benefit to the club, and, in my opinion, the quality of services provided.  I strongly believe that we will do a better job in house, because no one cares about the club like we the membership do. 

So, with that being said, Please help us.  We could use help with food prep Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

We could use help setting up the boat house on Friday.
We could use help on the dock on all 4 days helping to launch and land boats.
