MEMBER NEWS
Hello Members,
It seems funny after such a great skiing weekend to be writing about boating, but that’s the joy of living and boating where we do.  As I see the daffodils pushing their way out of the ground, my mind immediately wanders to the boat… and putting together the list of tasks that need to be completed before the real boating season starts for my family.  With the boat show in full swing, I’m guessing that many of us are experiencing this “spring fever” and are thinking about getting out on the water, so with that excitement as a backdrop, I can tell you about what’s happening with Membership!
We had an excellent “Friends and Family” membership drive, recruiting 10 new members.  Some have boats, some are actively looking and some are joining with a community of boaters so that they can learn about this endeavor…. this lifestyle.  You will be seeing our new members around the club, so please take the time to say hi and welcome them into our community.
Those of you who are new members will receive your welcome packet later this week.  Although we are a friendly community and will probably introduce ourselves to you right away, please take the initiative to come in and say hello to us.  If you introduce yourself as a new member I’m sure you will have a great time and leave with many new friends.
I have had some great responses to the suggested “boat mentoring” program, and will be putting together the details this week, so  I’ll reach out to you to understand what is best for you and what is realistic for this program.  I’ll be putting together details and announcing the program in next week’s Jib Sheet.   Thank you to the mentors for your willingness to share our love of boats and this area with other members, both those new to boating and those who want to learn about and experience boating.  You are helping us to foster an even stronger boating community and club.
That’s it for this week, so enjoy the Boat Show, enjoy getting your boat ready to cruise or cruising, enjoy the season and most importantly, enjoy the BYC!

The annual general meeting of the Directors and Handicappers of PHRF-NW was held at the Tacoma Yacht Club on January 31, 2016.  At this meeting, I was nominated and elected to serve as Chief Handicapper. My immediate priority is to improve overall handicapper responsiveness, consistency, and transparency.  This will begin by promoting more activity from the respective regional councils, more on-the-water driven appeals, and creating a sub-council of a handful of handicappers that would receive potential problem boats (identified by the regional councils), and develop appeals of those boats for council consideration.

Please attend the BYC Sail Fleet meeting on February 3 at 6:00 PM to learn more. Director Dave Steffen will also be present to discuss overall PHRF improvements scheduled for the near future.

JUNIOR FLEET NEWS

Some of our more hardy youth were out competing at this past weekends "Frigid Digit" regatta in Seattle.

3 Opti sailors Ria West, Emma Powell, Sean Powell and a 29er double handed team of Liam Hood and Shea Walker all raced both days with good wind and not too frigid conditions.

Well done to all for showing up and congrats to Emma who got on her first Opti podium with a 3rd place.

We'll be racing again in the Portlandia Cup in two weeks.

PUZZLES AND THINGS...

This Week's Photo Contest

Last week's picture was taken in Rode Heath, Cheshire, England. PC Terry Tavelli correctly identified the exact street (which is only 100m long). No one, however, correctly identified the celebrity -- the Cheshire Cat in the center of the picture.

No such tomfoolery with this week's picture of old cannon overlooking a picturesque harbor. If you know the location, send your answer to drsteveross@gmail.com

ALEX'S WEEKLY CHESS CHALLENGE!

The solution of last week's Chess Challenge was
1. Rf8+ Kxf8
2. Nxh7#

The winner was Scott McEniry and Lisa Harding.

Click HERE to see this week's chess challenge. Send your solution to Alex Marr at marra@asme.org

** Alex is headed Chile and Antarctica for the month! The next Chess Challenge will be 1 March.
