Club Scrub Revisited!

I have researched the Weather.com website and concluded that the nicest day this week will be Wednesday, May 4. Due to rain on April 2, we were unable to do the exterior touch-up painting. If you are available this Wednesday, starting at 12:30 PM, please join me to paint and make sure our clubhouse lots great on Opening Day. There's not a lot to do...4-5 of us could knock it out in a couple of hours or so.

Call me at 360 650-9319 or email vhaalen@comcast.net

BYC Dry Sailboat Moorage Available

Last year, in partnership with Etchells Fleet 16, the BYC entered into an agreement with the Port of Bellingham to lease 4 spaces in the Display Lot across from Web Locker Restaurant for Dry Sailboat Moorage.  This is a monumental agreement in that the Port officially acknowledges Sailboats on Trailer at the Squalicum Harbor Marina and paves the way for future Sailboat facilities.  (It is hard to imagine, that prior to this agreement, sailboats on trailers were not allowed on the Ports Property!!).    This agreement opens up a huge opportunity for the BYC with attracting One-Design racing fleets that would otherwise have no option to store their boats at the Marina.

One of these spaces has recently opened up and is available to the BYC membership.  This cost is about 1/4th the cost of keeping a boat in the equivalent wet moorage slip, not to mention the saving and hassle of maintaining toxic bottom paints.   The lease comes with a permit for unlimited access to the Port’s cranes located at the Gill Net Loading Zone and end of the Saw Tooth.

If you are interested in leasing this last Dry Moorage space, please contact Jonathan Knowles, jon@latitude48north.com or 360-303-5465.

Summer BYC Youth Sailing Classes:

Registration for BYC summer youth sailing class is now open. Classes are beginning to fill-up so don't delay registering your child or grandchild for this summer's classes. Visit youth.byc.org for more information on the BYC's summer youth sailing program.

Opening Day Bake Sale: The BYC Youth Sailing Club is having a bake sale on Saturday, May 7th at the BYC, beginning at 10am. Please stop by our table of delicious home-made goodies and take some with you on your opening day cruise!! This is a great opportunity to support the growth of the Youth Sailing Club. If you would like to make a donation of baked goods, please drop them off the day of the bake sale at the BYC.

High School Sailing Team: The Whatcom Community High School Sailing Team continues to do VERY WELL competing in area regattas. Last weekend, the Whatcom team placed third in the district (state) team racing championships at Bainbridge Island! The team tied for second in the regatta, but placed third after a tie-breaker. More than 70 races were held in fair winds and pleasant weather during the two day regatta. This is the second time during the 2011 season the Whatcom team has placed in the top three at state championships. Congrats to the 22 members of the Whatcom High School Sailing Team who competed in the team racing championships!

Thanks for supporting BYC youth sailing.

Spring Dinner Dance Memories

I am putting together a book for the club, with photos from the Spring Dance, and I need photos! Please email me at mermaid@zeninternet.com with your best pictures from the evening, for inclusion. The bigger and more unedited the file, the better for me. I can work with redeye images, and other imperfections, just not blurry ones.
Thanks! Sally Poorman

EVENT SCHEDULED TO HONOR OUR "OLD GUARD" OF PAST COMMODORES

On Tuesday, May 3, just before the Club's Opening Day, the Past Commodores will be having a delightful, "smart casual" dinner at Windows on the Bay.  With 31 PC's still surviving, the party could have as many as 62 in attendance, and that's what the leaders are seeking.  Of course, about 20 of our PC's are quite active, but this gathering seeks to bring the others up-to-date on what's been going on at our Club.

Our BYC By-Laws grant PC's Life Membership at the end of their term, but it's a very small price to pay for what amounts to 52 solid weeks of work, or more, after they assume the office.  And that doesn't count the time they service "going through" the other leadership chairs and Board membership...nor does it couynt the fact that many contribute what would be their dues to the Club, year after year when they complete their terms.  These contributions go to "The Past Commodores' Fund" which donates capital goods and helps with the Inati Bay lease and Internet costs.

Wednesday Night Mess Deck:  $5 Burger & Beer

Despite the dismal weather last Wednesday and the low racer turn out, it did appear the $5 Burger & Beer was a pretty good success with getting racers and members alike into the club.  So, I’m going to continue with this special for the short term and see if it grabs hold.   The grill should be going around 6 to 6:30 PM, so come on  for dinner wife and family (Kids $3 Burger & Soda) before the sailors get in from racing.   VOLUNTEER COOKS NEEDED!!  If you can help flip burgers 1 or 2 times during the racing season, please call me 360-303-5465 or send me an e-mail: jon@latitude48north.com.  It’s a great opportunity to help make the club more inviting and meet your fellow members.

Rotating Tap #5 – Ninkasi Spring Reign

This month on BYC’s Rotating Tap #5 is Ninkasi Brewing Company Spring Reign.  Ninkasi is one of my personal favorite Brewing Companies.  This make some, if not the best, beers in the northwest, including their signature beer and the Tricerahops Double IPA (The best IPA ever!).   Spring Reign is a seasonal beer from Ninkasi  that guides us into the Summer Ales.   Notes of toasted malt up front, with a bright and crisp Northwest hop finish, it’s a session beer that everyone can enjoy!

•Established 2009 •Starting Gravity 1052 •IBUs 38 •ABV 6%

Passing of a Member
When Angie and I joined the Bellingham Yacht Club, Art Rose, our good friend joined at the same time.  He passed away april 17th, 2011 . Art was spending the winter in Phoenix, Arizona and only was at the club for a few Monday Night Football games. He was a sailor, who was always quick with a smile and a handshake.  His boat was Merlin, a fantasia 35, down at gate 6.
We will miss you, Art.
