EDITOR'S CORNER:

We often hear of various rights under the U.S. Constitution. Many in our world still have no right to vote, or only get to vote in sham elections.

Beyond being able to give our say on national and local leadership and on various issues, voting is an affirmation of our democratic system. Please respect this privilege and vote if you have not done so already.
I look forward to welcoming you at the Commodore Ball.

COMMODORE'S COLUMN
Big Picture Number 5

Has it really been 5 weeks already? WOW!!!  I guess it’s true that flies can’t tell time when there’s rum.
I had the opportunity to sit down with inveterate volunteer PC Terry Tavelli, King of the Volunteer Management software we are rolling out to make it so much easier to coordinate and participate as a volunteer.  Named CERVIS (Community Event Registration and Volunteer Information System), it is a total volunteer management experience. I will be using it extensively to coordinate and manage the activities of the Board of Trustees over the coming months.
And, you ask, ‘what does this have to do with me?’.  Because we want you to be a volunteer! We have all sorts of fun opportunities you may not know even exist.  For example:
Roster Co-Author- the Board of Trustees has agreed to reinvigorate the BYC roster which over the years has been the source of all knowledge and history of the Club.  I need someone to help me edit, author, solicit advertisers, and generally update this vestige of club history.
Education Committee chair- this person will arrange for educational events over the course of the winter and early spring seasons. There is a wealth of resources in the ranks of the Power Squadron, Wheel and Keel, US Coast Guard, Border and Customs Patrol, to mention just a few. You could even organize a ‘how to make a soufflé on a boat’ and it would be standing room only.
Public Relations Committee chair- This is a plum assignment, since the Jib Sheet, Web Sheet and ‘Steve Moore email blast’ and Facebook page efforts are in place. What we are looking for is someone to coordinate with the Greater Bellingham Community all the great things we do.
Reporter and Photographer- We need a Clark Kent/Jimmy Olsen duo to keep an eye on all the great BYC events, cruises and regattas…all you need is a Brownie or notepad or pencil.
Social Programs- Trustee Shaun Thompson needs help keeping all the fun time’s rolling! Holiday decorations, landscaping, Boat Show bus, seasonal dances, wine tastings, Sunday brunches, Friday’s at Five, Turkey feasting, …the list goes on. There’s room for a lot of fun here, so heat it up!

Please contact me directly for any of these positions!
That’s it for volunteer recruiting…and speaking of volunteers, PC Bennett and her team are finalizing the Commodore’s Ball; right around the corner is Tom and Jerry night, with the service of the entire Board of Trustee honoring the membership and good comradery. And, it just wouldn’t be right to let pass the Sail Fleet Awards Friday’s at Five to honor the efforts of all those ‘dang racers’ who just can’t stop themselves from going out in weather when we stay home in front of the fireplace…and most recently during the Round the County race, hosted by Orcas Island Yacht Club and Friday Harbor Cruising Club.
Finally, please take a moment as the month passes to reflect upon the efforts and honor of our Veterans, and to relish the time with family during this Season.
So, for now,
Cast no wake upon our Burgee

Commodore Ball Help Needed!
**NEW TIMES**

We have been granted an earlier access on Friday evening and can now do our clean up (which should be minimal) on Sunday morning. (Thank you Windows on the Bay!)
Your help is welcome to transform the Club into a Scottish Highland Gala.  Whether it's placing tables on Friday night; Decorating on Saturday morning; Welcoming guests on Saturday night; or helping to clean up on Sunday morning... I'd love the help!
Times are outlined here!

Are you chairing an event or committee and need some help for a particular event?  Send a note to communications@byc.org and I'll put a call-out here!
MEMBER NEWS
An extraordinary evening last Friday, the investiture of our very own, the Honorable Paula L. McCandlis, was met with dignitaries, colleagues, friends and family from around the country. Please join me in congratulating her as she ascends to the Federal Magistrate bench for the Western District of Washington. A big thank you to Paula for her service to the citizens of this country, and particularly those of us closer to home.

Tim Thompson
Rear Commodore

Editor's Note:  Congratulations Paula!  An impressive accomplishment - and thank you for serving our community.

TOM AND JERRY PARTY
23 November 2016

Make your plans now to join your BYC Bridge and Trustees for one of the most long-standing of BYC traditions... the annual Tom and Jerry Party.  Designed as a way to kick-off the holiday season, the Tom and Jerry Party is always held the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving.  Commodore Neil and I will be serving up the complimentary 'Tom and Jerry' drinks (bet you can't stop at just one!) and we look forward to seeing you there!

LIGHTED BOAT PARADE

It’s November 1st, and time to start thinking about the holiday season.  Begin your planning now for the 2016 Lighted Boat Parade!  The festivities begin at 5:30pm on Saturday, December 3rd as we head for the rendezvous off of the Ferry Terminal and cruise along the waterfront.  We’ll take a swing through the boat launch basin before heading back to the club for appetizers, homemade soups, and the awards ceremony.  We have several wonderful prizes this year, and it’s always fun and festive!  New to boat decorating?  Never fear, our own PC Steve Ross will be presenting a seminar on Boat Lighting Techniques and Safety.  Keep an eye on the website (www.byc.org) for developing details, as you won’t want to miss this traditional Bellingham Yacht Club event!

SAIL FLEET NEWS
Round the County 2016 - Recap

The 2016 Round the County Regatta was yet another successful event hosted by the Orcas Island Yacht Club and the Friday Harbor Sailing Club. Of the 115 boats that competed in this world class event, 11 boats were from Bellingham to include: Natural Mystic, Mas Kaos, Vitesse, Intuition, Keet, Taku, Flying Circus, O’Benannas, Blade Runner, Hraven, and Eleven. This year, the fleet sailed clockwise around the San Juan Islands leaving all islands to starboard. Day 1 started out with 30 knots of sustained wind coming from the South with large wind waves. After many boats passed the half way point at Cattle Point, the breeze shut off and it became a drifter. Day 2 was also a great day of sailing with a downwind start in 8 – 10 knots of wind that built to 20+ knots of wind speed. Overall, I feel that the race committee did an exceptional job, the wind made for some great sailing, the current was significant, the competition was challenging and the event was an absolute blast!

PUZZLES AND THINGS

This Week's Photo Contest

Last week's photograph was taken on a rainy day on the Isle of Capri, Italy. John Raasch correctly identified the location, while John Gargett named a different island, somewhat farther north.

No contest this week, but a photograph to remind you that this is Election Day. Exercise your right to vote and help choose our next President and legislators. And remember, whoever wins, that person is the President of all of us. If you are unhappy with the result, work over the next four years to advance a candidate more in keeping with your views – and one who can win a majority of the votes.

ALEX'S WEEKLY CHESS CHALLENGE!

Alex is out of town once more -- stay tuned for a new challenge when he returns!
