FRIDAY@5 THIS WEEK!
You will want to bring an appetizer, we're expecting a good turnout!
DON'T FORGET TO SIGN UP! There are still spaces available on the fundraising cruise on the Schooner Zodiac Saturday, April 20. Here's a link to info to give to any friends or neighbors who might be interested. Thanks. --- Arne Ahlen
PLEASE PUT THIS ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW --- THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO OUR CLUB! On Sunday, April 7 from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. it will be Club Scrub Time (it's a Sunday this time because of events at the Clubhouse). Club Scrubs are fun while you join (and get to know) other BYC Members doing general, mostly light, maintenance work around our Clubhouse. We clean, paint, rebulb, adjust stuff, get out the deck furniture, wash, etc., etc. THEN, you get your "pay": free refreshments and pizza "on the house" while you admire the great contribution you've made to our great facilities. SEE YOU THERE! (There are a few jobs that can be done other times, call Mark Santosuosso, 927-4844 or email email@example.com to learn more about these.) PLEASE COME!
IT'S BURGER TIME AGAIN!
The traditional Burger & Beer for racing nights service begins this week, and you'll want to stop by the Club after racing for this inexpensive and delicious way to have more time with crew and friends. It's a BYC tradition...
The Bellingham Sailing Foundation and the BYC will be hosting a Racing Rules Seminar with Dick Rose
, This Thursday, April 4th @ 6:30pm
. This is perfect for all sailors, beginners and advanced racers! The proceeds go towards Bellingham Youth Sailing. It’s in the Ward Room, and the cost $15 for adults (pay at the door/free for students). Topics: 2013-2016 rule changes
with emphasis on mark-rounding scenarios, understanding the Rules Book and how use it, and questions from the audience. Sign

TRAINING & PROGRAMS
ON APRIL 24 FROM 6 TO 9 PM
we will have a three-hour training program called "Powerboat Systems and Operation"
. Taught by BYC Member Joe Coons
(who does this professionally every summer), the course will include a PowerPoint review (with notes) of typical inboard powerboat systems, a maintenance overview, and then 90 minutes or so aboard a 52' Grand Banks vessel with a discussion of maneuvering techniques with an included manual to end the evening. He will also schedule some actual operation classes for a later daytime date. Put the class on your calendar now.
The $10 fee will go to the BYC. Incidentally, Joe takes pride in working well with women who want to be comfortable on boats, whether operating them or not; probably half his his trainees over the years have been ladies!
It's a busy week of sailboat racing, Wednesday night racing series
starts this week followed by the Dick Rose rules seminar
on Thursday and Tulip Cup in Anacortes this weekend. Its looking like the sunshine will stick around for the start of our Weeknight racing, I hope to see everyone out there! --- Bart Maupin, Racing Fleet Captain
FINAL NOTICE FOR NOW: A 26' sailboat has been donated; we are setting up a program for it. Bob Hollingsworth is volunteering time to teach classes; we need volunteers to work on it and gather interest. The program follows outlines for charter certification, with classes starting May-June weekends (basic) and then in the summer, advanced. Interested? Call Arne Ahlen (360-201-9895) or John Stocklass (360-927-3239). Some boat work requires experience but much is simple! Call Bob (360-733-7126) or Mike Corcoran (360-319-5448) to help.
FROM OUR COMMODORE
This week was a knockout at the club. Whew, I am exhausted! Friday night’s Volunteer and Pirate Appreciation went well and everyone had a grand time. Special thanks to all those that brought food and helped out to make this event a special one. Rick Steidley and Matt Dennis,
you rock, thanks so much for your help to make this "Blue Moon Friday" a grand one. The music by the Vonvettas
was awesome as well!
Saturday’s Memorial celebration for Jim and Sterling
was held; although the crowd was small, all who attended had a wonderful time. The tables and chairs came out of storage so everyone could enjoy a wonderful time on our sunny deck, and a pair of bald eagles circled the club just before the ceremony as if to say, “we are okay”. It was an inspiring sight. “Rest in Peace, our friends, you are missed.” (Special thanks to Bishop Kevin
who came and led our prayers!)
This week I need to focus on the bus to Emerald Downs
. We need to fill the bus, and we have 19 seats left. Get your friends and sign up at the bar. All new members are welcome to come as well. If you have not paid please do so ASAP. We need to get our reservations in for the Box Seats and I will be putting those in on Thursday, April 4th. The bus will leave the club at 10:30 am, so please show up about 10:15 so we can get organized. The bus to the Ponies will be a fun time, don’t miss it! Bring your boating friends!
Spring Dance is right around the corner, so get those invitations in! If you would like to help with this event, email or call Kathy Brown! The Spring Dance Committee will need help putting that all together. Everyone is welcome to help!
One of our new members, Chris Opfer, was in an accident this past week. He is going to be laid up for some time. Our BYC Care Committee sent flowers and a card to him last Friday. He can have visitors and is at St Joes, Room 312. I am sure he would appreciate some visitors. Let him know all of his boating friends are thinking of him! Get well, Chris, we are pulling for you!
Remember the all-club survey
. It is posted on the website and offered here
. Please fill it out and send it to me. We will be accepting these surveys until April 15, 2013. Get your survey in, so your voice can be heard.
Enjoy our beautiful weather, boating friends….It is so spectacular at this time of year, the pink trees are blooming and the flowers are out! Happy Spring!

STEVE ROSS'S PHOTO CONTEST
No one correctly identified last week's picture
of the cog railway between Leysin and Aigle, Switzerland (Nautical connection? The Rhône River in the valley below feeds Lake Geneva.)
This week's photo was provided by Donna Olsen. If you know the location (and I bet several of you do ...) send your answer to email@example.com. Extra credit if you can tell me the nautical connection of this photo!
