Halloween at the BYC is great fun--the Club is spookily decorated, the Members are in costume, and tricks and treats abound! The Bar offers witches' brew and warlocks' draughts.
Our lovely, good Witch of the West, Judy Griffin is heading up this event. Please contact her to volunteer on the Halloween Social Committee at: email@example.com, and she will let you know about the planning meeting.
Thanks for heading up this committee, Judy! And see you there!!
Bellingham Yacht Club Sailing Fleet Book Club will meet on Wednesday at 7 to 9 p.m. at the BYC. This week, Ch. 5 & 6.
No Boating or Sailboat Racing experience required! The BYC Sailing Fleet Book Club is open to all, from youth sailors, to new sailors, to advanced racers and anyone who has an interest in learning and discussing books on Sailboat Racing. In addition to discussion with novices and experts alike, the sessions will include Racing Rules Quizzes to test your knowledge. There is no cost for this event. To register, send your name, phone # and e-mail address to Jon Knowles, FleetCaptain@EtchellsFleet16.org call 360-303-5465.
Monday Night Football EVERY WEEK!
Wine and draft beer and well drinks (Mt. Gay and Crown Royal are among the upscale well brands at our Club) are only $2.50 on Monday nights! And...the Etchells Fleet will be grilling cheeseburgers and Polish Sausage every Monday Night too! Proceeds from the Fleet's modest food prices go towards the High School Sailing Team.
Bring your snacks and appetizers to make it more fun...and cheer on your favorites. Start time is the same as the game in your newspaper or TV schedule each week!
Cribbage every Thursday night headed up by John Gargett and John Van Haalen. Don't know how to play? This is a great opportunity to learn!
Member Access to the Clubhouse
The new door access system is in place – thanks to PC Ray Poorman (2010 Reset Award Winner) and his team!
This is big news! Members in good standing will now be able to access the club during any day of the week.** Want to read your Sunday morning paper in front of the fireplace? You can! Want to join a few members for a 3 o’clock game of Bridge? You can!**
Your access code is the 6-digit number located on your new member cards. Just key in the 6-digits and then press the * key. If you wish to have your access code changed, please contact PC Al Callery (firstname.lastname@example.org). (You won’t receive a new card so you will have to remember your code if you choose to have it changed).
** To make sure that the Club is available for your use, please check the online calendar – located on the Facilities tab of the BYC website and send an email to email@example.com. Trustee John Van Haalen has taken on both the bartender scheduling and the clubhouse reservations so please keep him informed of your needs.
With this new privilege come a few obligatory common sense comments: This is YOUR club – you’ve all worked hard to create a beautiful place and it will take all of us working together to keep it that way. Please respect the rights and privileges you’ve been granted. ---submitted by Commodore Michele Hurst Bennett
Get your picture in the BYC Roster!
A New Feature Is Being Added to the BYC Roster!
Roster editor Joe Coons advises us that photos are being added to the roster both for Members and for their Boats! Here's what you need to do to get your pictures in the Roster which will be published in January: Before December 15, send a digital image of you (and your partner, if you have one) to firstname.lastname@example.org. The single image should include both persons if applicable, and be sure the image file name includes the Member's last name!
If you have a boat, you may send another image of it, again being sure that the file name includes the member's name! Joe reserves the right to crop images if necessary and they will be converted by him to black and white. He will acknowledge all images received.
We cannot guarantee all images will be published, but he says he will do his best, remembering this is the first year for this effort!
Thank you, Joe!! This should be a great improvement! It will take a lot of work: When done, there could be as many as 500 images in our yearbook. WOW!
[What a great idea! --ed.]

Fleet Captain’s Report
Mark Your Calendars!! Up coming events include the annual Tom & Jerry Party which is held the Wednesday evening before Thanksgiving – November 24th. This annual event kicks off the Holiday Season and is open to members only. Come join the Flag Officers and Trustees in a little holiday cheer – more details to follow in the coming weeks.
Also coming is the annual Sail Fleet Awards which will be held Saturday November 20th. The evening starts at 6:00. All sailing awards for the year will be presented. If you were active in racing or are interested in doing so next year, you should plan on attending. More details to follow.
The Lighted Boat Parade will be held again this year on the first weekend in December, in conjunction with the Port of Bellingham’s Holiday Festival. We will be parading both Friday and Saturday nights. After Saturday night’s parade we will be hosting a soup dinner at the club. The parades and associated activities will be open to all boaters in the area. Start planning your decorating ideas now!!! Awards will be given to the best decorated boats! This is a great event and a wonderful way to get into the spirit of the season. Many hands will be needed to make this event fun and seamless. We will need help with planning, boat registrations on Friday and Saturday, and volunteers to make soup, chili, bread, etc. for the dinner on Saturday. All are welcome to help; please contact me if you are interested.
I look forward to a wonderful year as Fleet Captain! Again, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any boating or activity ideas you may have.
Fair Winds and Following Seas,
Michele Bodtke, Fleet Captain
DO YOU HAVE CLUB KEYS?
Joe Coons advises he's bringing the Club's key cabinet up to date; it's a place where all our BYC keys are kept in the office, and over the years we've gone from hundreds of locks to "only" a few score, he says. In the process, he's discovered a number of keys that are missing and is asking for you to email him at email@example.com if you have any of the following: 1) Keys to the mark boats; 2) key to the exterior door at the back corner youth sailing exterior doors; 3) key to the door from the youth sailing room to the paint room; 4) key to the door (which also has an electric combination lock) between the youth area and the back hall by the sailing office; 5) key to the sailing office; 6) Any other BYC Keys, especially for outside youth sailing, boats & dock storage & padlocks. He'll borrow the key to get a backup copy and then return yours to you if you need it for your Club assignments. Thanks!
A MESSY JOB FOR SURE, BUT CAN YOU DO IT FOR US?
The freezer that is downstairs near the pool table must have been unplugged, and now it's stinky and dirty and needs a thorough cleaning. Can you help? If it could be done before too long, it would be great! Call Joe Coons at 739-1528 or John Van Haalen 650-9319 with questions...you'll need a bucket and some cleaner to get it done, and perhaps a nose clip, deodorizer and incense while you do it! Thanks!Remember to submit your articles to Jibsheet@byc.org
If you know of someone who is an incognito volunteer hero for the BYC, please submit his or her name to the Jib Sheet editors along with why you are submitting it to Jib Sheet Volunteer nominations. We look forward to hearing from you soon. For all submissions, Deadline is Monday noon.
Fairwinds and Following Seas, your JibSheet editors: Joe Coons, Jim Langei and Kathy Brown
