Last week’s Steak Nite was very successful, again, with 74 tender and juicy filets served to hungry diners! This week is Memorial Day weekend, and Angie and company have a cruise planned that should be great fun!  Here is this week’s bar schedule:

WED: Hawaiian style burgers and brats!

THUR: Monica’s Mexican, with authentic carne asada and those tasty bean burritos!

FRI: Bar and lounge open at five. Hang out on the deck and catch some rays!

SAT: Bar and lounge open at five. Hang out and catch some more rays on the deck while soaking up the incredible view!

See you in the lounge!  -- Steve

The Junior Ski to Sea event happened over the weekend and the BYC had a booth there to promote our learn to sail program and race team. The Opti fleet sailed on the lake in the morning and the high school team sailed FJ's in the afternoon in front of large crowds. Thousands of kids came through the park over the course of the day and many of them stopped by to visit.  --Trustee Mike Powell

Summer is coming!  Enroll your child (and tell their friends!) about the BYC Youth Sailing Classes happening all summer long.  Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced small boat handling; Cruising Camp; and Beginner Group Keelboat classes available.

Becca and I are joining BYC and looking for a boat to crew on.  We currently race/sail out of Shilshole on Malolo, a J-40, working jib and pit.  If you know of anyone looking for crew, please give them our names and phone number.  We will be available after Swiftsure.

Hey BYC Cruisers,
It isn't too late to join us up in beautiful Montague Harbour on Galliano Island, B.C. this Memorial Day weekend May 22-25.  Did you know it's only 36 nautical miles from Bellingham?  Once you clear customs in Bedwell Harbour on Pender, it's just a quick jaunt up to Galliano.  You can still sign up on the website if you plan on attending.  We have some fun adventures and relaxing activities planned, see the
BYC Cruising website or the jibsheet for the flyer on cruise details.
Hope to see you in Montague!

Save the Date! The Past Commodore Roche Harbor cruise is May 29-31. The harbormaster needs our reservation numbers two weeks prior to our arrival. That means I need to know who's going, taking a boat that is, by May 15th. Please get your reservations in so that a space at the dock may be reserved for you. Sign up through the website or send me an email. More details about the cruise to follow. PC Michele Bodtke,
Editor Note:  The "Past Commodore Cruise" is open to ALL BYC members!  The cruise is organized by our Immediate Past Commodore (Michele Bodtke), but ALL are welcome!

It was a busy weekend for BYC’s Youth Sailing Program with three separate events going on at once.   So we had to divide and conquer.  First, BYC Trustee and Jr. Fleet Captain Mike Powell was at Lake Padden for the Jr Ski to Ski Race and Festivities.  BYC Youth Sailing set up an Information Booth and took kids out for some free sailing in our club’s Opti’s and FJ’s.  This was great exposure for our program and generated a lot of interest from kids and parents alike.
Second, BYC Youth Racing Director Scott Wilson was down in Portland, Oregon for the US Youth Sailing Bemis Qualifiers.  BYC Racing Team included Jeffery Werner, Shea Walker and Liam Hood pictured below showing of the new BYC Racing Team pinnies.
And finally, myself, my wife Ann, and Arne & Anna Ahlen helped out with the Annual BYC Youth Sailing Zodiac Cruise Fundraiser.  The 35 Members and Guests set out for a beautiful sail around Bellingham Bay with lunch and libations.  Those aboard helped hoist the sails, take in the sheets and lines, and even steer the boat.    Check out the photos on Flickr.
On behalf of the Bellingham Yacht Club, I’d like to thank Director Bob Boroughs and the Schooner Zodiac crew for donating their time and the afternoon sail to the BYC Youth Sailing Program. We raised just over $1100.  Also, thank you to Virginia Jepson who made a donation so that a family who could not afford the Zodiac trip had the opportunity to go.  The Schooner Zodiac is a beautiful asset to our Bellingham waterfront and local tourism.   They offer many different multiday and day cruises, including a Youth Sailing Adventures, Salmon Dinner and Ales & Sails.   Visit for more information.

About 70 members and guests were in attendance at last Friday’s Steak night.  Another great turnout!  Thanks to Steve Hayward, Missy Steffen and Dick Labadie for putting on these great member socials.  Check the Jib Sheet for next month's date.
This upcoming Memorial weekend several Bellingham Sailors, including myself, will be racing the Victoria Yacht Club Swiftsure International Yacht Race, while the BYC Cruise Fleet will be heading over to Montague Harbor on Galliano BC for a long weekend cruise.
This Thursday is the BYC Board Meeting.   Membership Chair Tim Thompson will be presenting 27 new member applications from our recent membership drive for approval; the Board needs to make a decision on capital spending with painting the building and exterior; and Committees and Fleets will file their reports.
Cheers -- Commodore Jonathan
This Week's Photo Contest

Thanks to Susan West for last week's photograph of the harbor on Symi Island, Greece. John Van Haalen correctly identified the location.

This week we see a cruise ship sailing past our location. If you know where it is, send your answer to
