SOCIAL NEWS- UPCOMING EVENTS

 MEMBER MIXER
Friday, 15 January

Come enjoy our first 'Pasta Night' by Chef (Thomas) Childs in our newly certified kitchen!  $10 gets you pasta, homemade sauces, salad and bread. New Members (as of July 2015 or later) receive a complimentary dinner!  Please come welcome new members and learn more about the club usage and amenities.

Susan Hempler

Social Chair - Trustee

THIS FRIDAY NIGHT IS A
NEW MEMBER MIXER!

New Members are members who joined any time after July 1 of last year, and current applicants.  As a club we should make a special effort to help new members during this period, so that the first few months are spent making lasting relationships and everyone feels welcome.  As a volunteer club this is critically important as the more value someone gets from the club, the more they will give to the club and the community in general.
…so…
Please be there to welcome, hob nob, tell stories and make new friends.  I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to start off on the right foot with new members, often it is these first contacts that will steer their first impression and future activity within the BYC.
If your schedule permits, please think about coming to the club this Friday.
-Chris Jacobs, Trustee

The winter drive is going well and we have a number of new members and applicants who will be joining our family!  Remember, this is the last week so tell your friends.  If they have their application in this week they can come to the new member mixer!
So let’s say “Hello” and “Welcome”, and treat our new members in a way that will encourage their participation and create value for them and in turn, all of us!

SAIL FLEET NEWS
The 5O5 North American Championship is coming to a yacht club near you!

Our club has been fortunate to be selected to host the 2016 5O5 North American Championships.  This is quite an honor for us, and a chance to showcase the BYC to the country, and perhaps the world.  The International Class President has plans to come here from Australia.  We have commitments from the current world champion, and several past world champs to attend.  The list of attendees will be a who's who of sailors, including Olympic gold medalists, world champs in several fleets, and folks who strive to rub elbows with them.
Our Bellingham fleet has been gearing up, honing local knowledge and hosting skills clinics, including one last summer with World Champion Mike Holt from Santa Cruz.  There are plans for another clinic in the spring with Fritz Lanzinger, another amazing sailor who crews with Mike Holt and others.
This is going to be a great year for the fleet, and the club.  We will be busy in the coming months recruiting volunteers for shore side, and on the water opportunities.  The event will take place June 2 through June 5th, with mandatory boat inspection June 1.
I just wanted to take a second to let you know we are busy with this, and that we hope some of you will help us to make the event great.  It would be fantastic to put the BYC on a national stage, known for not only its fantastic racing, but for its excellent hospitality and facilities.
Feel free to contact me, or grab me in the club to talk about what you can do to help.
Respectfully,
Mike Poulos, Chair

COMMODORE'S COLUMN

On Thursday there was a sail fleet meeting to discuss the upcoming season and the schedule. Mostly routine, but some good ideas were brought forward to build the fleet and make the season more interesting for those who come out. I hope PC Jonathan Knowles will have more information as the weeks tick by before racing starts in April.

Friday was our monthly Steak Night. I wasn't there and so I really have nothing to report. I hope it was well attended. I'm sure Dick Labadie did a good job with the broiler duties as he usually does.

This Friday will be our first Pasta Night and New Member Mixer. I will be in attendance to welcome our new members. A big Thank you to Susan Hempler and Susan Henderson for setting everything up.

I would also like to get more folks interested in attending the Seattle Boat Show Bus at the end of the month, Saturday, the 30th. We only have 16 people signed up so far and we need to get at least 40 by January 15th. Otherwise, the bus will have to be canceled. It's a great event and we eliminate the parking hassle. I urge you to consider this as a great end of month excursion to a fun venue.

For those who use our facility, especially the Ward Room (down stairs), please remember to lock up after you leave. I have come down to the Club the last two Wednesdays and found the downstairs entry door locked in the open position.

Lastly, I was so happy to see our mighty Seahawks triumph (a real nail biter) over the Vikings. What a game!

PUZZLES AND THINGS...

This Week's Photo Contest

The Court Dwarf Morgante, immortalized in a statue in Florence's Boboli Gardens, was the subject of last week's picture. Most people, including me, assume the statue is of Bacchus, but Terry Tavelli and Jim Gibson sent short dissertations on the statue clarifying its origins. John Van Haalen, John Raasch, Ken Ford, and Michele Bodtke also correctly identified the location.

This week we see a canal-side pub. Easy enough to Google the name, but can anyone tell us what the name means (without Google)? If you know, send your answer to drsteveross@gmail.com.
