FRIDAY AT 5 POT-LUCK DONORS: DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR RECIPES? Please send your main dish, appetizer, side and salad recipes to the Cookbook Committee! The group advises the book will come out in the last quarter, and you'll want to be included, and there's a bonus for anyone who submits six or more!  Here's where to post them: Thank you.  PS: The cookbook committee also needs the donor names for the Mediterranean Summer Salad, Vegetarian Frittata, and Breakfast Cornbread!!

DILIGENCE PAYS OFF!  Heather Ouilette who schedules our volunteer bartenders emailed everyone with a reminder how important it is to check everyone's membership card.  Her email was prompted by this report from one of our volunteers: "I believe someone from the Liquor Control Board came in and attempted to get servedHe looked out of place, wearing a suit and carrying a portfolio - initially I thought he might be with the event next door. When I asked him if he was a member and informed him that we were a private club - he immediately apologized and said "he understood", turned around and left the building."  It is this kind of attention to details that keeps our record unblemished. THANKS!
SORRY, YOUR DISHWARE IS GONE!  You can retrieve it at the "Mother of all garage sales" benefiting Lydia Place August 10-11 from 9-5 Saturday, 9-2 Sunday, at the Bellingham Sportsplex.
LAST WEEK'S FACTOID:  Our Members Daryl Lin and Sharon Chang own Michael Vincent, a Grand Banks 36 "woodie", and spent three years in Wellington, New Zealand; they even have a dog named Wellington. They both are PhD's, and Daryl is a statistician for a Seattle drug manufacturer. They are enthusiastic new boat owners, and Sharon has volunteered to take over the job of BYC Membership Secretary from Marian Welch; thank you, Sharon. [Send your Member Recognition Suggestions to]

KARMARTUSA PITCH INVITATION: BYC Members are invited to join in on the KarMartUSA  PITCH Regatta Festivities.  The Pacific International Ton Championships are for sailboats using the Ton measurement system, and it’s a regatta that BYC has hosted since 1974: next year will be its 40th year!
The Committee invites all BYC Members to join in the fun: A Blue Moon Friday@5, Aug. 30, featuring a skippers' welcoming BBQ.  Then, on Saturday 8/31, the After Race Happy Hour and Dinner (reservations required for dinner) and live music, and finally, on Sunday 9/1, a Raffle, Silent Auction, and the Awards Ceremony immediately following the race.
HEY, PITCH VOLUNTEERS: Join the camaraderie and excitement of this grand BYC tradition.  You don’t have to race or be on the race committee to participate, but volunteers are needed to help.
There will be a meeting on Monday, August 12th at 6pm at the Club for all volunteers that plan to work any portion of  the PITCH regatta. Volunteers are needed for registration and clothing sales on Friday evening August 30, and for the water Race Committee action on Saturday (8/31)and Sunday(9/1).
Please plan to attend the meeting if you have told me that you will help, have a job already, or if you would just like to participate in some way. --- Randy Nulle,  KarMart PITCH Chair, 360-920-3178 or rnulle@comcast.netcrew is needed on land and at sea!
BUCCANEERS' CRUISE PRIZES NEEDED! We are looking for good quality gifts for the three treasure hunts/chests for the Buccaneers Cruise. It could be anything; we have children's, teen & adult treasure chests. The more treasure we have the better!  Suggestions: board games, fishing equipment, beach toys, nautical novelties, jewelry, sporting gear. Please email Jim Santosuosso at or text Angie S. at #360-927-4844. Thank you!
LETTER FROM A MEMBER: "To our BYC friends: Skylark II, our Tollycraft 43 is a legend in the NW. After 18 years, Joe & Judy Coons had readied her for us to own since 2007. She has been our home and adventure boat since, taking us to wonders from Olympia to Sitka and the Broughtons. Easy to learn and a handling pleasure with her newer John Deere engines and Wesmar stabilizers, she is efficient, comfortable, and stable: perfect for the NW!
Now it's time to hand Skylark II to her next adventurers . She had many upgrades over Joe’s years, and we continued the tradition with our own careful improvements. Skylark II will be ready for viewing by potential future loving owners in a week or so, and we're available anytime! Thanks."
 Gordon & Susie Hilaski, 562-252-6800.”

[Ed. Note: We will run a boat ad twice, free, for any Member.  Contact Jibsheet13@BYC.ORG.]
BURGER SPECIAL CONTINUES: Our Wednesday Weekly Racing & Burger Night has continued to be a success and a fun evening at the club. In addition to our cheeseburgers, we will be offering vegetarian black bean burgers for our Club's non-meat eaters. Carnivore or not, come on down and enjoy a tasty burger and beverage this Wednesday! Also, if you'd like to get involved with grilling, please contact Matt Ouilette at
BARTENDER REMINDER: Empty kegs when disconnected should be put in the closet at the foot of the outside steps to the lower floor (the combination is the same as the walk-in cooler.  They do not go outside, nor just in the hall by the cooler door!  The beverage vendors now know to pick them up there, and they won't be stolen (costing us the significant deposits). Thank you.

Summer Sailing Classes:  The summer is half through and sailing lessons so far have been a blast. We couldn’t ask for much better weather or wind! Thanks to all of the sailors who have come out and participated as well as the parents for their support of this program. Three more weeks of classes and cruising camp coming up! See what we’ve been up to on our Facebook page: --- Megan Link, BYC Youth Sailing Program Coordinator
Ranger 26 Sailing Lessons... Mo'Betta's skipper, Bob Hollingsworth, has been hard at work getting this craft shipshape and is prepared to offer the best deal in town.  Where else can you find an experienced seaman, with stories to tell, who is prepared to teach you all the elements of sailing and cruising for $30 per day!!  Youth and adults are welcome to put together groups of 3-5 persons of similar experience and then we can arrange time for a class at a mutually agreed date.  Contact Arne Ahlen at or call Bob Hollingsworth at 360-733-7126.  If you cannot put a group together, we may be able to pair you up with another person or group.

Happy summa time everyone.  Thank God the sun came back.  I am always looking for the sun, and I hope you are all out enjoying the wonderful summer weather.

Adult Sailing Classes:  Adults and teens alike, I want to remind you that Bob Hollingsworth is offering sailing classes at a very reasonable price.  If you want to learn to sail please contact Bob or Arnie Ahlen to get all the details.
Keep your schedules open for our upcoming events: August 16,17, & 18th Buccaneer’s Cruise; August 24th Crab Fest “Chuckanut Bay”; August 31st Blue Moon Friday @ 5 and the PITCH Regatta! Food will be provided, and there will be Music by the Vonvettas, so let’s rock and roll!  See you all there…

Last week's photograph was of the River Livet, taken just outside the Glenlivet Distillery in Scotland. Pam Heward was very close with her answer of the River Spey (of which the Livet is a tributary), while Susan Hempler Hooper was a bit farther afield...
This week we see a calm sea with a rocky beach from a high vantage point. Things weren't always so peaceful here. If you know the location, please send your answer to
