 see Mike Poulos’ story below...

MOORE INVITATIONAL IS WEDNESDAY!

The 19th Annual Moore Invitational is this Wednesday - July 18th!   There will be a 6:00 p.m. start, with all classes in one start, no dinghies.  The Race Committee will set the course, with a pot luck dinner at BYC immediately following the race --- be sure to bring a Potluck to share with all!  (The Club will open at 5:00 if you’d like to put your dish in the Club ahead of time.)

FRIDAY AT FIVE THIS WEEK!

You’ll have free fun when you drop in to your Club (it’s a "First or Third Friday" this week) anytime between 5 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.  Bring an appetizer to share if you can.  See you there!

AHOY TO FIVE NEW BYC MEMBER FAMILIES!
  • Bill Heward's daughter Brenda McAllister, from Vancouver, owns an 18' SeaRay.
  • Dave and Annette Yell are now able to rejoin our ranks. They live here in Bellingham and sail a 50' Celestial named Fairwind.
  • How many clubs do you know that have two Jane Sylvesters in their membership? Welcome back to former members and Bellingham residents Bob and Jane Sylvester who sail a Sabre 39 named Callisto.
  • We also have two new junior members, Liam Hood and Alexis Rollinger.
Next time you are at the club, look for them, stop and say hello, and invite them to join you on the next cruise or on your favorite committee.  --- Marian Welsh, Membership Secretary

TUESDAY RACE REPORT:

Laser racing on Tuesday nights has been spectacular.  There are consistently 10 to 15 boats on the line, with people as young as 11 and as old as 57.  Thanks to the excellent work of the race committee, we are able to average 4 races a night.

After racing, racers and committee members usually meet at the bar to swap war stories and (If they are over 21) drown their sorrows.  The quality is definitely improving thanks to a strong infusion from the high school sailing team.  Our recently painted dock is bustling, as 10 to 12 people work together to rig and de-rig.  We now accommodate new boats under the club, as the dock is pretty much full.

If you are interested in being a part of BYC's most exciting racing program, either as a racer or on race committee, give me a call at 360 676 4263.  Next race is Tonight (Tuesday 7/17).  1st gun 6PM with hopefully fifteen boats on the line!  --- Mike Poulos, Sail Fleet Captain

YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM UPDATE

The first three weeks of sailing lessons have been successfully completed.  Enrollment increased from nine the first week, to 14 the second week, and to a basically full session of 23 in the third week.  The feedback we have received has been positive and several students have signed up for additional classes.  Unfortunately the Racing Camps have not attracted as many participants as we had hoped for and this week’s class only has five registrations.

We still have space in all the remaining sessions for this summer.  Please help us get the word out about our outstanding instructors and program!   --- Arne Ahlen - BYC Junior Fleet Captain

BUCCANEER CRUISE REMINDER:  8/17-19

Here’s the poster.  On Friday the 17th at Inati Bay, dinner is on your own, with an evening of sing-along around the campfire with Joe Young and a movie on a sail.

Saturday, get into your pirate & wench or buccaneer costumes, join the children's treasure hunt, the adults’ treasure hunt and the costume contest with five categories to be judged with prizes.  Then there’s the Buccaneer Dinner with steak, grilled fish, and salads (bring a side or dessert to share).  Finally, the live band features "Seatown Rhythm and Blues Players”, s’mores around the campfire, and a couple of kegs.

Sunday, a pancake, sausage & egg breakfast provided for all those who help with clean up and breakdown of Buccaneer Cruise equipment and supplies.  Then, when you feel like it, back home.

No boat? Free transport to Inati on the 18th at 10 a.m. returning at 7 p.m.  For a ride, sign up at the bar; bring your own Life Jacket if possible!

SAD NEWS ABOUT A FORMER MEMBER…

From BYC’ers Pam and Bill Heward:  “We are sad to report we lost our friend Niall Hackett Saturday, presumed drowned in the Skagit River.  He was a member for only one year, two years ago...one of the crazy Irish we know in Edgemoor!  His wife, Terri, and two young boys, Declan and Connor are left.

He did not wear a life jacket and was thrown from his river sled into the extremely high and fast moving Skagit River when he hit a deadhead or rocks near Lyman.  The Skagit County Sheriff says they would continue today (Monday) to search the logjam where he was presumed to be trapped underwater.  Many friends and coworkers of their company, Materials Testing Corporation, waited with Terri and the boys in Lyman for good news yesterday but sadly, the rescue has became a recovery.”

SUMMER SOLSTICE 2nd SAIL RECAP

(Note: the name has been changed to remove the word  “race”, since we really just want everyone to get out on the water and the prize is not based on how fast you go.  Bring non-sailors and introduce them to our Bay and our Club.)

The second of the Summer Solstice Friday Sails went off last weekend and it was a bit of a fireworks show in the thunderstorm that rolled through (See Amazing Photo taken by Randy Nulle AKA Race Committee).   Double the number of boats showed up for this second of five planned Friday-Fun Sails.

The Theme was “The 80’s – Why did ever like that Synthesized Crap” which sported a first place trophy of a bottle of rum dressed up in Millet Wig and Chains (See attached photo thanks to Donna Olsen.)  This first place prize was awarded to the team of Rick & Susan for sailing double handed.  Rick was a BYC guest and races occasionally with Mick on Blackfoot.

The next Summer Solstice Series Sail #3 is on Friday July 27th.  The theme is “Flight” (In reference to the movie “Top Gun”, however, “Butterfly Wings” work as well.)  --- Jonathan Knowles

THIS WEEK’S PHOTO QUIZ FROM STEVE ROSS:

Last week we had a tie for "Best Answer." Jim Gibson correctly noted that the picture was taken from Avenue de New York near the Jardins [Gardens] du Trocadero. Marsha Riek was very close on the location and recognized the significance of the timing: Bastille Day was last week (June 14th). The Tour de France is also happening, but doesn't reach Paris until this week. Many others, including Rob McCardle, Jamie Foti, Marty Haines, Lisa Megard, and John Van Haalen gave good answers.

This week we have a night-time photo. If you know the location, and the name of the central object in the photo, send your answer to steve.ross@wwu.edu

Remember to submit your articles to  Jibsheet@byc.org  Deadline is each Monday noon.
