And the Award Goes to…

Listen up, West Bucktown! It's about to get all real up in here!

Alderman Joe Moreno and the 1st Ward Office have launched the inaugural 1st Ward Awards, and serious bragging rights are at stake! They're asking folks to vote for the "best of the best" in the 1st Ward, including the best:
  • Restaurant
  • Bar
  • Business
  • School
  • Community Group
  • Festival
  • Neighborhood Group (THAT'S US!)
  • Neighborhood Addition
  • 1st Ward Staffer
  • Local Politician (not Joe Moreno)
Click here to cast your votes! And when you do, try to remember how much fun you had at the neighborhood block party in August. Or at the Post Holiday Blues bash we threw back in January. Or how much you appreciate receiving these email notifications. And how beautiful our new Lucy Flower Park is going to be! The point is, we've come together as a neighborhood and a community in some pretty spectacular ways, so let's make sure to let the rest of the 1st Ward know just how fabulous we are!

And while you're at it, don't forget to give a shout out to some of West Bucktown's biggest and best community partners, including An Orange Moon, Birchwood Kitchen, Canine Crews, Chilapan, Handlebar, Margie's, MSA & Circus Arts, Multilingual Connections, Naveen's Cuisine, Sergio & Banks, and West On North. Let's spread the love around and make sure our 'hood gets as much recognition as possible! Vote today, and please encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same!

The WBNA Wants YOU!

Every year at about this time, we send out a "call to the community" looking for volunteers who might be interested in getting involved with the WBNA.  If you read our e-newsletters, attend WBNA parties and events, play in our parks, or just generally like what you see when you walk down the street, then you've experienced firsthand the value of having an active neighborhood association here in West Bucktown. We serve as the eyes of the community, the voice of the people, the feet on the street — and we even have the ears of our Alderman and Police Commander.
IMAGE: We Want You!
If you've been considering getting more involved in the WBNA, but aren't sure exactly how or where you might best fit in -- have no fear! We're looking for folks with a variety of backgrounds, interests and talents. As long as you're committed to seeing the neighborhood continue to thrive, and you have the energy to help make that happen, we'll find a spot for you, either on the Board or one of its many Committees. It won't require a big commitment of your time, but the rewards to the community will be huge.

Still on the fence? We're planning a casual cocktail party for all interested volunteers later this Fall. If you'd like to be included on that guest list, please shoot us an email at info@westbucktown.org. We think you'll find that we're a friendly, welcoming group that is  truly passionate about the work we're doing here in West Bucktown. We'd love to add your fresh ideas to the mix!

Dust Off Those Lucy Flower Pics

IMAGE: Lucy Flower ParkAs we brace for the first stage of the Lucy Flower renovation project -- demolition of the existing playground equipment  is expected to start in November or December -- we thought it might be fun to put together a little "farewell tribute" video for the park. Do you have a favorite picture (or short video) of your family enjoying the park that you'd like to see considered for the video? If so, please email it to us at communications@westbucktown.org. We'd love to include as many happy faces as possible!

West Bucktown Clean & Green Nov. 2

Mark your calendars, folks! It's time for our annual fall clean-up! (In case of inclement weather, the raindate is Sunday, November 3.)

"Can You Dig It?" Day Nov. 23

IMAGE: PerennialsThe Lucy Flower Garden Club will be hosting a "Can You Dig It?" Day at the park on Saturday, November 23 from 10 am to 2 pm. As the name implies, there will be lots of shovels involved!

In anticipation of the impending demolition of the park for the renovation project, we'll be digging up all perennials and transplanting them to fill in bald spots throughout the neighborhood. It would be such a shame to lose the beautiful flowers and greens we've so carefully planted at Lucy Flower over the last several years! There will also be ample opportunity to divide plants to share with our volunteers. Please bring a shovel and some gloves if you've got 'em — we'll also have some on hand, as well as water and healthy nut-free snacks for all.

And since no one knows how to dig in the dirt better than the under-10 crowd, feel free to bring the kids and make a family outing of it!
