Go West, Young Man!
(And Woman! And Child!)

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard us mention West On North and all the wonderful support that owners Joe and Laurie Sabath have thrown to the Lucy Flower Park renovation project over the last couple of years. From hosting fundraisers to donating food, drinks and gift certificates, they've been a most welcome addition to the West Bucktown community and our cause.

IMAGE: West On North PatioSo now that the warm weather is finally upon us, it seems only fitting to return the favor and make sure everyone in the 'hood knows about the amazing outdoor patio they've got hidden away at West On North! Nice and spacious and with a great mix of sun and shade, it's the perfect summertime setting for drinks with a friend or dinner with the kids. (Both the patio and inside restaurant are family-friendly until about 9 pm or so, when a more adult vibe kicks in.) West On North's "Little Westy" menu features a variety of kid-tested (and Mommy approved!) fare, including mini burgers, chicken fingers, mac-n-cheese, mixed veggies, PBJ, corn dogs, and tater tots. Or indulge your grown-up tastes with daily food and drink specials, such as $1 sliders on Saturdays, 1/2 -price wings on Sundays, or 1/2-pound Angus burgers for just $4 on Wednesdays. And of course, West On North also features a great selection of craft beers and wine, all reasonably priced and a lot cheaper than you'll find at most places in the area.

The patio is open from 4-11 pm Monday through Friday, 4 pm to midnight on Saturday, and 11 am to 11 pm on Sunday. Food is served until 1 am. And in just a few weeks, they'll begin opening at 11 am on Saturdays, as well.

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to West On North and support the neighborhood restaurant and bar that supports us back! (Oh, and make sure to tell them the WBNA sent you. ;-)

Zoning Committee Applications Now Being Accepted

Do you want to become more involved in the West Bucktown community? Are you interested in shaping neighborhood development? The WBNA Zoning Committee is looking for new members! The Committee typically meets once a month to discuss zoning change proposals and related issues within the WBNA jurisdiction. This is your chance to get an inside look at proposed developments before they happen, and to work with developers and the Alderman to create balanced and appropriate construction throughout West Bucktown.

To be considered, please click here and submit our online application by Wednesday, July 31. Questions? Email zoning@westbucktown.org.

Chicago Cares for Maplewood Park

IMAGE: Chicago Cares Serve-A-Thon
It took more than a little rain to dampen the spirits of the 40+ volunteers who descended upon Maplewood Park June 15th as part of the Chicago Cares Serve-A-Thon — the largest single day of community service in Chicago. They came to rake, mulch, weed, plant, and prune, and they weren't about to let a few grey clouds get in the way of the tasks at hand! They worked tirelessly through the rain showers for 6 hours, and when they were finished, Maplewood Park was positively gleaming.

West Bucktown is truly fortunate to have been selected to participate in this program — we could never have made such a huge impact on the park in such a short amount of time without the help of these wonderful volunteers. So a huge THANK YOU to all the employees, families, and friends of Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Potbelly's Restaurant for rolling up their sleeves and getting dirty with us!

Dog Park Meeting This Week

The next meeting of the West Bucktown Dog Park Committee will be held Thursday, June 27 at 7 pm at a neighbor's home. This meeting will bring everyone up to speed on various conversations that have occurred with the Chicago Park District and 1st Ward Office over the last several weeks, followed by a discussion of the necessary next steps to move this initiative forward. Anyone interested in helping to bring a dog park to our neighborhood is welcome (and encouraged) to attend! Please email Naomi Goldberg at goldberg.naomi@gmail.com for the meeting location.

Third Thursday THIS Thursday

Just a reminder that this month's regularly scheduled Third Thursday at Maplewood Park was pushed back one week to accommodate last week's Lucy Flower Fundraiser. So that means the fun is happening THIS  Thursday, June 27 @ 6 pm. Grab a blanket, some drinks, and snacks and come hang out with us!

Community Yard Sale July 13

The Maplewood and Lucy Flower Park Advisory Council (MLFPAC) will hold its annual West Bucktown Community Yard Sale at Maplewood Park on Saturday, July 13 from 9 am to 3 pm, rain or shine!. This is your chance to clear out the basement or garage and put some extra money in your wallet! You can rent a 10' x 10' spot for only $25, due in cash the day of the event. Set up begins at 8 am, and you'll need to bring your own table and chairs. Email westbucktownparks@yahoo.com to reserve your space today.

This year, the WBNA is going to rent a spot at the Yard Sale, and we're looking for donations from the community to sell. If you've got a couple of items you wouldn't mind parting with, but you don't have the time or energy to man a table yourself, let us take care of it for you! All proceeds will be funneled back into the community to fund future WBNA events and initiatives. Email us at info@westbucktown.org and we'll make arrangements to pick up your items from you.

Don't have anything to sell? Then simply make it a point to stop by for a little shopping and to hang out with your neighbors!
