Calling All Moms and Tots
PlayWith the cold Chicago winter months just around the corner, smart moms have already started thinking about ways to keep the kiddos entertained (and their sanity in check!) once the weather turns ugly.

West Bucktown resident and new first-time mom Angela Mead is looking to connect with other parents in the area to form a neighborhood playgroup (or groups). Details and logistics will need to be hashed out, but her goal is to organize regular (weekly?) gatherings of West Bucktown moms and tots, with groups rotating among participants' homes and meeting at special venues on an occasional basis. Kids get the opportunity for socializing and unstructured play, while parents enjoy some much-needed adult conversation! Families with children from newborns through age 3 are invited to participate.

“I’m encouraging anyone who might be interested to contact me so we can get a feel for the ages of the kids and begin thinking about the best way to structure the groups,” said Angela. “Ideally, all participants will work together to establish general ground rules and schedules at our first event.”

If you’d like to hear more, please email Angela at angi_w@hotmail.com and she’ll keep you in the loop as details take shape.

Let's Make Merry!
The craziness of the holiday season is almost upon us, so mark your calendar today to attend the annual WBNA Holiday Party on Thursday, December 9 at Life’s A Cabernet. Details are still being worked out, but you can count on an evening of good friends, great conversation, and fabulous wine! As in previous years, we will select a local charity to support with donations of food, clothing and/or toys for needy families in the West Bucktown area. If you’d like to suggest a charitable organization for consideration, please email wecan@westbucktown.org.

They're Called "Fun"draisers for a Reason!
West Bucktowners recently gathered to support two neighborhood fundraising events, and a great time was had by all!

MLFPAC FundraiserAt the Maplewood and Lucy Flower Parks Advisory Council Fundraiser, guests noshed on delicious hors d’oeuvres and clinked glasses of wine and beer as they mixed and mingled with neighbors and friends. The fun culminated in a raffle drawing, with more than $2400 of donated prizes given away to lucky ticketholders, including gift certificates for consultations and acupuncture treatments from Wicker Park Chiropractic Health. Fittingly, the evening’s big winner was Maplewood Park instructor Naomi Rivera, who took home a $150 Canon digital camera. Other winners included Randy Houts ($150 Life’s a Cabernet wine tasting and $50 bottle of wine), Chiayu Chui McGill ($125 gift certificate to Solao Fitness and Dance), and Kelly & Steve Lobaugh ($85 facial from Spa Soak, $30 gift certificate to Treat, and $20 of coffee syrups from Jo Snow). Best of all, the event raked in almost $2000 for the Parks Advisory Council – money that will be used to fund program scholarships for kids in the neighborhood.  Keeping class enrollment numbers up helps West Bucktown justify having a staff person at Maplewood park, which makes it easier for the kids to enjoy the toys and sports equipment and helps discourage gang activity and graffiti.

Cortland Preschool FundraiserAt the Cortland Preschool Fundraiser, guests were treated to a rare behind-the-scenes look at what goes into building an environmentally-conscious preschool. From the architectural drawings that graced the walls, to the countertop and flooring samples, to the masking tape that outlined the future location of tiny tot-sized toilets, the evening was a study in all things eco-friendly. architecture plansPreschool director Amy Ewaldt worked the room, fielding questions and topping off wine glasses, while a magician amazed guests with slight-of-hand card tricks, old school style! With construction expected to get underway this winter, the Cortland Preschool is shaping up to be a wonderful addition to West Bucktown in 2011. And if the fundraiser’s turnout is any indication, the school will receive a warm welcome from parents, neighbors, and donors alike.

Many thanks to everyone who stepped up and came out to support each of these worthy causes!

New CAPS Organizer
We are pleased to report that West Bucktown has a new CAPS organizer! Resident Liz Rios is filling the position, which has been vacant for some time now. This is great news for West Bucktown because it means we now have a liaison between the neighborhood, the Chicago Police Department 14th District, and the 1st Ward.  Liz is very knowledgeable and active within the community and will undoubtedly serve us well. Thank you, Liz!
