Spooktacular Family Fun!

Happy HalloweenWBNA is hosting the annual West Bucktown Halloween Party on Saturday, October 30 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at St. John United Church-Christ, 2442 W. Moffat.  Grab the kids and join us for games, crafts and candy galore!  We’ll also have a costume parade, with prizes awarded for the best in each age group (under 3, 4-7, and 8-10).  This is one event that promises an unBOOlievable time for all!

Adult volunteers are still needed to help supervise the games and crafts table.  If you have an hour to spare and are a big kid at heart (Dads, we’re looking at you!), please email and we’ll happily put you to work!  Donations of bags of individually wrapped candy or small toys are also greatly appreciated.

Thank you for helping us make this a great party for our littlest West Bucktowners!

Parks Fundraiser Nov. 4
The Maplewood and Lucy Flower Park Advisory Council will hold its annual fundraiser on Thursday, November 4 at Naveen's Cuisine, 2325 W. North Ave.  The evening kicks off at 7:00 p.m. and will include a mix of delicious food and wine, as well as great raffle prizes donated by local businesses.  And the best part is that all proceeds from this event will benefit our neighborhood parks!

West Bucktown resident Naveen Sachar will be on hand to whip up a few specialty items from his cooking studio, including lemongrass shrimp and grilled chicken kabobs marinated in Indian spices.  And fellow West Bucktowner Christopher Libby will pair these dishes with the perfect glass of vino from his Life's a Cabernet wine shop on Milwaukee Ave.

This special event is limited to just 50 people and will fill up fast, so reserve your spot today!  The cost is a tax-deductible $55/person, with cash or check due at the door.  For reservations (the deadline is October 29), raffle donations or to volunteer to help, email

Volunteers Spruce Up Parks
West Bucktown's Maplewood and Lucy Flowers parks are now sporting Fall makeovers, thanks to the many "green thumbs" who recently banded together to help spruce up the neighborhood's outdoor spaces.  Dozens of residents pitched in to clear away debris, plant bulbs and perennials, trim trees and bushes, and mulch flower beds.  Come next Spring, their efforts will reward the entire community with green, bloom-filled parks that  make us all proud.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who donated their sweat equity to keep our parks beautiful!

Circus Stars Hit West Bucktown
MSA & Circus Arts is planning two special performances at its Campbell Street location this Saturday, October 23 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.  Both 90-minute shows will feature a mix of veteran and rising circus stars from across the Chicago area.  Young and old alike should prepare to be dazzled by their daring displays of strength, balance and agility!

Proceeds from this fundraising event will benefit MSA & Circus Arts, a nonprofit organization that relies heavily on private donations to underwrite the cost of training its nationally recognized Sports Acro team.  Admission is a suggested donation of $15 for adults and $12 for kids...and it's free for the under-3 crowd!

Homer Street Halloween Potluck
West Bucktown residents along the three-block stretch of Homer Street are organizing a neighborhood Halloween Potluck Block Party on Sunday, October 31 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.  Hotdogs, grills, condiments and paper goods will be provided; guests are asked to bring a side dish or dessert for sharing, as well as any beverages or chairs their family needs.  Trick-or-treating for the kiddos begins at 2:30, with the grills and games firing up at about 4:00.

Please stop by and enjoy a few "Homer Halloweenies" with some great neighbors!  Your RSVP is greatly appreciated for planning purposes:  Amanda Miller at or Eileen Bruckert at

Book Buddies Wanted
Looking for an easy and rewarding way to get more involved in the community? In just a few weeks, Open Books, a nonprofit organization that proOpen Booksmotes literacy throughout Chicago, will bring its one-on-one "reading buddies" program to students at nearby Cameron Elementary School. Supportive volunteers and mentors are needed from the area to make this program possible.  Spend just an hour each week during the school year reading with the same two students to help build their literacy skills and encourage a lifelong love of reading!  To learn more or to sign up, please visit or email with any questions.

Nobody's Perfect
In the September 27 edition of WBNA Neighborhood News, we reported the results of an online survey about the North Avenue liquor moratorium, noting that First Ward Alderman Joe Moreno had agreed to respect residents’ wishes and would not introduce an ordinance to lift the ban in West Bucktown.
But in that same article, we inadvertently mischaracterized events regarding the liquor moratorium to our immediate north.  In the same way he asked the WBNA for its recommendation, Alderman Moreno also consulted with the neighborhood association directly impacted by the ban that governs the Walgreens at Armitage and Milwaukee.  Neighbors in that area were not “indifferent” to lifting the moratorium (as we originally reported), but actually supported lifting the ban.  It’s a small but important distinction, as it illustrates the Alderman’s willingness to respect each community’s independent thinking and act accordingly.
We regret any confusion our choice of words may have caused, and we thank Alderman Moreno again for taking residents’ opinions into account when making these kinds of important decisions.
