Lucy Flower Website Launch

IMAGE: Lucy Flower ParkHopefully by now you’ve heard the good word – thanks to the persistent lobbying efforts of the Maplewood and Lucy Flower Park Advisory Council, West Bucktown’s own Lucy Flower Park is scheduled for a makeover in 2013!  This is fabulous news for neighborhood children and families alike, particularly in light of the Bloomingdale Trail project that will likely follow right on its heels.

But did you realize that we’re still some $24,000 shy of being able to break ground on a new playground this spring?

That’s right. While the Chicago Park District has agreed to move forward with the design of the project, they can’t actually bid out the construction until all funds are fully committed and available. Fortunately, 1st Ward Alderman Joe Moreno has pledged $140,000 over the next three years, and the Parks District is picking up the lion’s share of the project costs. But as a community, we have committed to raising $70,000 to put toward the renovation – and to date, we’ve only got about $46,000 in our coffers.

This is where YOU come in!

Today we’re officially launching a new section on the WBNA website to help us band together as a community to cover the shortfall for the Lucy Flower renovation project. Click here to be redirected to the page, where you’ll find all the pertinent background information, design plans, committee recommendations, photos, fundraising progress, and details on the various ways you can contribute to the new-and-improved Lucy Flower Park.

As 2012 draws to a close, we thank you for considering a tax-deductible contribution to the Lucy Flower renovation fund. Remember – strong parks make for strong communities! No matter how large or small, please know that your donation is huge in the eyes of the children and families who will enjoy Lucy Flower for years to come.

Let’s Eat, Drink and Be Very Merry

IMAGE: Post-Holiday BluesIf you’re like a lot of us, January can be a rough, tough month. The holiday parties are over, the company is long gone, and the house is littered with pine needles. So now what?

Many thanks to Joe Sabath and his staff at West On North for once again hosting the WBNA “Beat the Post-Holiday Blues” party on Saturday, January 26 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. The celebration is open to all West Bucktown residents, young and old alike. We hope you and your family will join us in raising a glass (or juicebox!) to all that we’ve accomplished together as we look ahead to a promising new year full of friendship and fun.

West On North will get the party started with complimentary appetizers, and the first round of drinks is on us for anyone who has paid their 2013 WBNA membership dues! (Click here to pre-pay via the WBNA website, or you can join/renew at the party.)  By popular demand, we’re also considering another “Re-Gift Raffle,” wherein several lucky winners take home such unwanted holiday fare as ugly sweaters, ties, hand lotions and stale fruitcakes.

On a more serious note, this year we’re making West Bucktown’s own Maplewood Park Fieldhouse the beneficiary of the WBNA holiday charity drive. We’ll be collecting cash donations at the Post-Holiday Blues Party, but we’re also encouraging folks to bring an item or two from the following “Wish List”:

  • Art kits -- the easier the better (www.orientaltrading.com is a great source)
  • New or gently used toys and books
  • Cordless phone
  • Hand soap, baby wipes, Kleenex
  • Fan for the summer months
  • TV/DVD player
Consider this  your small price of admission for what promises to be a fun evening for all!  The park’s needs are relatively simple, but the rewards for the children are tremendous.

Your RSVP isn’t necessary but is greatly appreciated for planning purposes. Please email info@westbucktown.org to let us know if we should expect you!

2013 WBNA Membership Drive Count Down

IMAGE: Piggy BankThe 2013 WBNA Membership Drive officially kicked off September 1 and was scheduled to run through December 31 of this year. BUT!  Now we’ve extended the deadline for joining or renewing your membership to January 26, the day of our Post-Holiday Blues Party!

Annual membership dues are just $25 per household, or $50 for businesses and organizations. Best of all, 100% of the money gets funneled back into West Bucktown -- from subsidizing our holiday parties, to supporting neighborhood parks and recreational activities, to funding communications like this newsletter and our website.

As an added incentive, everyone who pays their 2013 dues by January 26 will be entered into a random drawing to receive a gift certificate for two (2) cooking demos at Naveen's Cusine. Think of this as your chance to enjoy a night out courtesy of the WBNA!

You can pay your dues in advance with your PayPal account or credit card at www.westbucktown.org, or pay with cash or check the night of the party.
Thanks in advance for all you have done – and continue to do – to make West Bucktown a great place to live

The WBNA Needs You!

IMAGE: WBNA BoardThis is your final call to consider joining the WBNA Board in 2013!  We’re losing a few members to moves, babies, and other opportunities – which means we’ve got room for new blood and fresh thinking on the Board!

If you read our e-newsletters, attend WBNA parties and events, play in our parks, or just generally like what you see when you walk down the street, then you've experienced firsthand the value of having an active neighborhood association here in West Bucktown. We serve as the eyes of the community, the voice of the people, the feet on the street — and we've got the ear of 1st Ward Alderman Joe Moreno.

"The partnership between me, my staff, and the WBNA Board is one of mutual respect and a sense of shared responsibility," Moreno emphasizes. "Over the last several years, we've rolled up our sleeves together to address a number of safety, zoning, and environmental issues in the community, and I've watched WBNA members work tirelessly to build camaraderie among West Bucktown residents.  Attrition is inevitable on any Board, but I look forward to working with new members to continue this positive momentum well into 2013 and beyond."

If you've been considering getting more involved in the WBNA, but aren't quite sure where or how you might fit in -- have no fear! We're looking for folks with a variety of backgrounds, interests and talents. As long as you're committed to seeing the neighborhood continue to thrive and you have the energy to help make that happen, we'll gladly find a spot for you on the Board. It won't require a big commitment of your time, but the rewards to the community will be huge.

Still on the fence?  We encourage you to join us at the upcoming Post-Holiday Blues party on January 26 to see the team in action and chat informally with Board members. For more info, shoot us an email at info@westbucktown.org.
