Come for the Pink, Blue and Yellow...

WHAT:          West Bucktown Easter Egg Hunt
WHEN:          Saturday, April 16th @ 10:00 a.m.
WHERE:        Maplewood Park

Image: Easter BasketGrab your Easter basket and join in the fun! Neighborhood kids ages 10 and under can hunt for candy-filled eggs, win prizes, meet the Easter Bunny, and more! Two grand prize winners will each receive a brand new bicycle!

This event is always a perennial favorite with our littlest West Bucktowners. To pull it off properly, we're asking for donations of bagged candy (individually wrapped pieces like Starbursts, Milky Ways and Smarties), as well as small prizes appropriate for the 10-and-under crowd, such as jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and Silly Bandz. (The Dollar Store is always a great resource for these kinds of trinkets.) We'd also appreciate Target gift cards in amounts of $10, $15 and $20.

If it's your time you'd rather give, we'll happily take that too! We need volunteers to help us stuff more than 1000 plastic eggs with candy -- a "stuffing party" will be held on Thursday, April 14 beginning at 6:00 p.m. We also need volunteers to help out at the actual event on the 16th. Although the egg hunt itself takes only 10 minutes, we need a few folks to assist us with crowd control and egg hiding.

A big thank you in advance to everyone for pitching in to make this egg hunt our biggest and best yet! Please email us at if we can count on you to donate candy or prizes, or if you'd like to help out at the stuffing party and/or the hunt.

...Then Stick Around for the Green!
Image: Green TreeImmediately following the Easter Egg Hunt on April 16th, the WBNA Environmental Committee is organizing a neighborhood Clean & Green, with Maplewood Park serving as our meeting point. This is a great opportunity to get the whole family involved in giving West Bucktown a thorough spring cleaning!

We’ll provide gloves and trash bags, as well as coffee, juice and donuts for all volunteers – but please bring your own rake or broom if possible. We’ll be cleaning out Maplewood Park, planting three beautiful Paperbark Maple trees (courtesy of Sprout Home), and picking up trash from the surrounding streets.

Your RSVP is not required but is greatly appreciated for planning purposes. Please email us at if we can count on your help!

Grants Awarded to West Bucktown Parks
The WBNA Environmental Committee and the Maplewood and Lucy Flower Park Advisory Council (MLFPAC) are pleased to report that both of West Bucktown’s parks have been awarded Parkways Foundation grants this year. Maplewood Park will receive a $1,500 grant, while Lucy Flower (which just established a formal Garden Club late last year) will receive $1,250.

Image: Lucy Flower ParkThe Parkways Foundation was created in 1994 as an avenue to raise private funds for projects within the Chicago Park District. At Maplewood and Lucy Flower, the grant money will help fund everything from plants and flowers to tools, fertilizer, mulch, and fencing – even snacks and drinks for volunteer gardeners! The grant is a particularly important step in the right direction for Lucy Flower, where it will essentially jumpstart the planned transformation of the park into an organic children’s garden and playspace.

While the grant money is certainly a wonderful windfall for West Bucktown, it will fall short of its full potential without much-needed volunteers to put it to good use! If you’d like to learn more about how you can help keep our parks thriving, please email MLFPAC at or the WBNA Environmental Committee at We’re always looking for a few good green thumbs to join Team Green!

Preserve Those Memories!
Image: VHS TapesHave you been staring at those stacks of VHS tapes on your bookshelf, wondering what to do with all the hours of priceless footage from wedding ceremonies, kid’s birthday parties, sporting events, and family reunions?

VHS tapes have a limited shelf life and will eventually deteriorate, so converting to digital format is the only way to ensure your memories will still be viewable long after your VCR bites the dust. Now, thanks to a special partnership between neighborhood business Gorilla Tango Theatre and the Maplewood and Lucy Flower Park Advisory Council (MLFPAC), West Bucktown residents can convert their old VHS tapes into modern digital format for a fraction of the typical cost.

Gorilla Tango recently created a new service called VidiCorp.US, which preserves recorded family memories by converting VHS tapes into digital formats like DVD and MPEG. Mention either MLFPAC or WBNA, and Gorilla Tango will give you a special deal on its conversion services – just $10 per 2-hour tape, or more than 65% off the standard price. Even better, $5 of that cost will be donated directly to MLFPAC. Win win!

This is a great deal for West Bucktowners and an easy way for us to support a local business as we raise funds to help renovate Lucy Flower Park. For more information, please visit to get a free quote and read reviews of their service. Tapes can be dropped off at the office above Gorilla Tango Theatre at 1919 N. Milwaukee; offer valid until March 31, 2012.
