Last Call:
Liquor Moratorium Poll

Today is the last day to cast your vote in a simple yes/no poll about lifting the liquor moratorium that is currently in effect along both sides of North Avenue, from Leavitt to Campbell. The poll will officially close today, September 13, at 5:00 pm.

In response to a proposal from Walgreens to begin selling packaged liquor at its North Avenue location, First Ward Alderman Joe Moreno has asked the West Bucktown Neighborhood Association to weigh in on this important matter. If you have a Facebook account, the necessary background information and survey can be found here.  All others can email and a copy of the poll will be sent to you.

Thanks for making your voice heard, and for helping to shape the future of West Bucktown. Results of the poll will be distributed to WBNA members in an upcoming communication.

Park Plantings Planned
The Garden Clubs at both Maplewood and Lucy Flower Parks have BIG Fall planting intiatives planned in the next couple of weeks, and they need all green thumbs on deck to help them out. If you have even an hour to spare, please head over to Maplewood Park on Saturday, September 25 at 9:00 am to help plant perennials, get bulbs in the ground, and spread compost and mulch. For those who can't make it or have enough energy to devote to both parks, the process will be repeated at Lucy Flower the following Sunday, October 3 at 10:00 am. This is a great way to meet other "green" neighbors while keeping our parks beautiful for all to enjoy. Remember, a little hard work now will reap big dividends come Spring!

Your RSVP is not required for these events, but is certainly appreciated for planning purposes. Also, the Garden Clubs will gratefully accept donations of bulbs, perennials, mulch, etc.  Please email if you are able to help out.

Volunteers Needed for
Halloween Party

With October just around the corner, the WBNA could use a bit of help planning its annual Halloween Party. Designed with the littlest West Bucktowners in mind, this event has always proven extremely popular with the under-10 crowd! If you have some extra time and energy to devote to our children and know how to get your scary on, please email and we'll gladly add you to our planning committee!

Book Club Starting Soon
Plans are underway to officially launch the West Bucktown Book Club this fall.  We have a great group of people signed up already, but there's still room for a few more avid readers.  (And it doesn't hurt if you love wine as much as books!)  If you would like to participate, please email Amanda at and she'll keep you posted as details develop.

A Heartfelt Thank-You
As you may recall, torrential thunderstorms flooded the basement of the soon-to-be Cortland Preschool last July, destroying dozens of cherished reading books for its little learners. But when the WBNA put out a call for help, West Bucktowners responded!

"I would like to thank the West Bucktown Neighborhood Association and all of the wonderful neighbors who stepped up to offer assistance with our post-flood book drive," said preschool director and resident
Amy Ewaldt.  "I am happy to report that with your generosity and help, we have been able to rebuild the library back to its pre-flood level.  And we also made some great new friends along the way. Many thanks to everyone for turning what was a very sad day into a month of happy surprises!"
