And the Winner Is...
Congratulations to Jaime Bollman, winner of our 2011 WBNA Membership Drive contest!

Image: ChilapanA newcomer to the WBNA, Jaime slipped in just under the wire and paid her dues on February 28, the very last day of our 3-month contest. And it’s a good thing she did, too, because she’s now the proud owner of a $50 gift certificate to Chilapan, the neighborhood’s stand-out Mexican BYOB, and a bottle of 2004 Astrales Ribera del Duero generously donated by Chris Libby of Life’s a Cabernet. This fruity and spicy red wine will pair nicely with the bold flavors of Chilapan’s signature entrees. Buen provecho, Jaime!

Image: Astrales WineMany thanks to all West Bucktowners who stepped forward in record numbers this year to pay their membership dues. This strong show of support will enable us to continue all the great work that’s underway to make our neighborhood shine.

It may be too late to enter this year’s contest, but it’s never too late to get involved in a great community effort. So what are you waiting for? Join the WBNA today!

Graffiti Removal Reminder
Image: GraffitiIf you’ve spent any time at all outdoors during these dreary winter months, you’ve probably noticed an uptick in graffiti in and around West Bucktown, as well as the City in general.

While there’s likely no single reason for the increase (it appears to be a mix of gang-related tagging and generic teenage mischief), we’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that prompt removal of graffiti is the best way to demonstrate that West Bucktowners won’t tolerate having their property  used as a personal chalkboard for taggers.

There are three ways to file a report with Graffiti Blasters:

  1. You can file an online report here.
  2. You can call 311.
  3. You can email or call the 1st Ward office at ward01@cityofchicago.org or (773) 278-0101. Alerting the 1st Ward is actually a great way to improve response time, as they will monitor the situation and follow up with Graffiti Blasters as needed.
Please note that you will need to provide the EXACT address/location of the graffiti (including North, South, East and West designations), the type of surface it’s on (brick, aluminum siding, etc.), and whether it’s more than 6 feet off the ground. In addition to reporting graffiti on your own property, you should feel free to report graffiti you see on nearby and abandoned properties, as well.

If you witness graffiti taking place, the 14th District Police Department strongly recommends calling 911 and NOT remaining anonymous. It is very difficult to prosecute this type of vandalism without an eyewitness to provide testimony.

Remember…someone comes to West Bucktown for the first time every day. Let’s all do our part to make sure his or her first impression is a good one!

Next Neighborhood Dinner On Tap
Mark your calendar! The second in our ongoing series of “roving restaurant” get-togethers is scheduled for Monday, April 4 at 7:00 pm. This time around, the folks at nearby Owen & Engine will be opening their doors to West Bucktowners with a 10% discount on all food and drink purchases.

Image: Owen & EnginerLocated at 2700 N. Western across from the Regal movie theater, Owen & Engine burst onto the Chicago scene just over a year ago, quickly winning over restaurant critics and patrons alike with its rustic, British-inspired comfort food and ales. (Check out this recent review from Pat Bruno at the Chicago Sun-Times.)  It promises to provide a great backdrop for yet another evening of fantastic food, friends and fun!

Your RSVP is not required but is greatly appreciated for planning purposes. Please shoot us an email at info@westbucktown.org if you hope to make it!
