Family Fun Fest at Maplewood!

IMAGE: Family Fun FestWest Bucktown will kick summer into high gear on Wednesday, August 7, with another fabulous Family Fun Fest at Maplewood Park! Please join us at 5:30 pm for this FREE evening of family-friendly festivities, including arts and crafts, games, workshops, and a special showing of the action-packed movie "Pirates of the Carribean" at dusk. Grab some blankets and lawn chairs, pack up a picnic basket, and come make an evening of it!IMAGE: Pirates of the Carribean

West Bucktown is so very fortunate to have such a wonderful park venue available to the neighborhood for these kinds of fun summertime gatherings. Many thanks to the Chicago Park District and the Maplewood and Lucy Flower Parks Advisory Council (MLFPAC) for giving us yet another opportunity to appreciate and enjoy Maplewood Park to the fullest!

Block Party Plans Taking Shape

Grab your lawn chairs and blankets, pack a cooler with your beverages of choice, and join the West Bucktown Neighborhood Association for a good old-fashioned neighborhood block party on Sunday, August 18 from 2:00 to 6:00 pm! We'll be setting up at the western-most end of the 2500 block of Moffat Street, adjacent to Lucy Flower Park.

IMAGE: Block PartyWhile supplies last, we'll be handing out freshly grilled hot dogs (courtesy of 1st Ward Alderman Joe Moreno), apple slices from McDonald's, and frozen treats compliments of the WBNA. And by all means, please feel free to bring along a goodie or two of your own to share with the group — this is an occasion that calls for some serious neighborhood noshing!

There's also some pretty heavy party-planning going on behind the scenes to make sure we've got a little something for everyone this year, including:
  • Carnival games and prizes for the 10-and-under crowd.
  • Facepainting by the fabulous babysitters of UrbanSitter.com.
  • A dunk tank — and Alderman Moreno has agreed to take a 30-minute shift on the hot seat!
  • Arts & crafts projects, including colorful tribal masks and a West Bucktown community quilt.
  • Spanish storytime at 3 pm, with an interactive, bilingual reading of "Where The Wild Things Are" by Multilingual Connections.
  • A special doggy-friendly area sponsored by Canine Crews, where dogs on a leash can stop by for treats, playtime, and a romp in the pooch pool!
  • A rousing Bags Tournament for all ages, with prizes for the winners.
  • Temporary tattoos from the talented Jeremy at True Blue Tattoo.
  • A visit from the Bucktown firetruck! (Schedule permitting, of course — actual emergencies will naturally take precedence over our party.)
  • And much more!
IMAGE: FiretruckIf you attended last year's block party, then you already know how much fun this event is for young and old alike. It's by far one of the easiest and most relaxed ways to get outside, enjoy our community, and meet some great neighbors in the process. Really...you should come!

A Special Note to Moffat Street Residents

If you live along the 2500 block of Moffat Street, or if you frequently park your car in that area, we're asking for your cooperation in making sure that the street is clear of vehicles for our neighborhood block party on Sunday, August 19. As a reminder to residents, signs will be posted along the street beginning next week. Although the actual party will run from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, set-up will begin at noon, so cars should be moved during the morning hours if at all possible.

Our city-issued permit covers the entire block, but the party will likely only stretch from Rockwell east to about 3/4 of the way down Moffat. However, we are also hoping for a visit from a Bucktown firetruck, so we'd like to make sure that the street is clear to provide as much room as possible for the truck to maneuver.

We apologize for any inconvenience this causes to our neighbors, and we hope you'll join us for what promises to be an afternoon of fun!

Third Thursday Next...Thursday

Just a reminder that Third Thursday in August falls a little earlier than you might expect. Join us at Maplewood Park next Thursday, August 15, at 6 pm for a little neighbor-to-neighbor hang-out. Think of it as practice for the West Bucktown block party that Sunday! Turnout has been great this year at previous Third Thursdays, but we're always happy to see new faces!
