You Gotta Pay to Win!
There’s just one week left to take advantage of the special incentive attached to this year’s WBNA Membership Drive. Everyone who pays their 2011 dues before February 28 will be automatically entered into a random drawing to receive a $50 gift certificate donated by Chilapan, coupled with a great bottle of wine from Life’s A Cabernet

This is your big chance to enjoy a night out on the town, courtesy of the WBNA!

If you’ve been scratching your head trying to remember when you last paid your dues – you can relax! We’re taking the guesswork out of the process for you. From here on out, instead of waiting until the anniversary of your original join date, we're encouraging everyone to pay or renew their dues each year before February 28. That way, we’ll all be on the same payment schedule going forward, and we’ll know exactly how much money we have available to plan neighborhood activities.

Annual dues are a nominal $25 per household, or $50 for businesses and organizations. Best of all, 100% of the money gets funneled back into West Bucktown. From subsidizing our holiday parties and social gatherings, to funding communications like this email blast and our new website, membership dues are absolutely critical to keeping the association moving forward. Plus, membership has its perks, including voting rights in future Board elections, as well as ongoing access to our e-newsletters, email alerts, safety phone trees, and more.

You can pay your dues at www.westbucktown.org with your credit card or PayPal account. If you prefer to pay with cash or check, please mail your payment to the West Bucktown Neighborhood Association, P.O. Box 477282, Chicago, IL 60647.

Many thanks to those of you who have already stepped up and paid your dues for the coming year. Good luck to everyone, and remember – you gotta pay to win!

Too Close for Comfort?
Image: "My Bloody Life: The Making of a Latin King"With chapters like "Saving Maplewood Park," "Chi-West," and "Humboldt Park," there's little doubt that Reymundo Sanchez's acclaimed "My Bloody Life: The Making of a Latin King" is a book West Bucktowners will want to read. Which is precisely why we’ve chosen it as the next WBNA Book Club selection!

Book club gatherings are always open to everyone, but given how close to home Sanchez’s book hits, we thought we'd extend a special invitation this time around. If you’d like to read and discuss this book about a boy from a fractured home who is enlisted by the Latin Kings – right in the heart of our ‘hood – please join us on March 24th at 7:00 pm. (You can order a copy of the book here.) Please RSVP to Amanda at amandavanek@hotmail.com and she’ll let you know where we’re meeting.

Get Out and Vote!
The City of Chicago will hold its 2011 Municipal Elections on Tuesday, February 22. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Offices up for grabs this time around are the Mayor of Chicago, City Clerk, City Treasurer, and all 50 City Alderman positions, including our very own 1st Ward.

To determine whether you are registered to vote, click here and enter your name and zip code. If you are registered, this link will also give you your polling place. And if you’re still undecided about how to cast your vote, both the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times have compiled information on the Municipal Election candidates.

We encourage all West Bucktowners to do their civic duty and vote for the candidates they feel will help keep our great city and neighborhood moving forward!

Help Wanted
The WBNA is seeking someone to spearhead the task of making our arterial commercial streets part of a Chicago "Special Service Area" (SSA). SSAs bring money for business development to particular neighborhoods -- and we believe West Bucktown should have its share!

The WBNA won't leave you without support, but it would be great if someone interested in this sort of initiative could step forward and help get things off the ground.  If you'd be willing to consider taking a lead role in this effort, please email Brad Fiorito at bradfiorito@gmail.com.
