Hanging with the 'Hood!
Shared Cost Sidewalk Program
Holiday Thanks
Snow Removal Reminder

Hanging with the 'Hood!
floyd's pub imageJust a reminder that the first in our "roving restaurant" series of West Bucktown social gatherings will take place next Wednesday, January 19th at 7:00 pm at Floyd's Pub, 1944 N. Oakley Ave. We've got a great core group of people already signed up, but there's always room for more! We encourage everyone to grab a neighbor and stop by for some good food, great drinks and friendly conversation.

And get this -- Floyd's Pub is generously offering us 2-for-1 entree prices, plus draft beers for $4.00. How's that for being downright neighborly?

Walk-ins are certainly welcome, but for planning purposes, we'd love to know in advance if you're hoping to make it. So shoot us an email at wecan@westbucktown.org, pretty please! Hope to see everyone there!

Shared Cost Sidewalk Program
Is your sidewalk in need of a few repairs? The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program is an extremely popular initiative that enables Chicago residents to share the cost of sidewalk repairs with the city. After reaching capacity in 2010, the program recently re-opened on January 1st and is once again accepting applications.

For 2011, the unit cost charged to homeowners remains $3 per square foot – an excellent value and well below what a private contractor would charge. Senior citizens and people with disabilities will continue to receive a 50 percent discount.

The scope of a Shared Cost project includes the main walk, the courtesy walk (which runs perpendicular from the main sidewalk to the curb), and existing catwalks/landing steps (the small strip of concrete sometimes found adjacent to the curb). Owners of corner properties will continue to be charged for both the main (address side) sidewalk and the sidewalk on the non-address side of the property.

Replacement is based on engineering considerations. The scope of the repair work will be determined by the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT). CDOT will continue to build ADA-compliant corner ramps where applicable, with the city paying the entire cost of the ramps.

Applicants are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and the program is expected to quickly reach capacity, at which point it will close for the year. Please note that applications are only being accepted through the City’s 311 system (phone or website). You will need to specifically note that you want to participate in the Shared Cost Sidewalk Program and provide the following information:

  • Builder owner or occupant’s complete name and contact number.
  • The building’s complete address.

Please note that if your application is missing any of this required information, it will not be processed.

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program is a great way to increase property value as you help to improve the walkways of West Bucktown. For questions, contact  CDOT at (312) 743-1422 or cdotnews@cityofchicago.org.

Holiday Thanks
Cheers to everyone who stopped by the WBNA Holiday Party last month at Life's A Cabernet. We made some great new friends, uncorked some yummy wine -- and got a bit corked ourselves in the process!  By the end of the evening, it's safe to say that a very merry time had been had by all.

We also raised almost $400 for Humboldt Park Social Services.  That translates to more than 150 hot meals, or 5 months of heat for an area family, or more than two weeks of family housing. Thank you for recognizing a real need right in our own backyards, and for pitching in to help make a difference.
