Dog Park Meeting Oct. 3
IMAGE: Dog parkThe Maplewood and Lucy Flower Parks Advisory Council (MLFPAC), in cooperation with the West Bucktown Neighborhood Association, has organized a meeting with a representative from the Chicago Park District to review the city’s requirements for establishing a Dog Friendly Area (DFA) in our community.  The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 3 at 6:00 pm at the Maplewood Park Fieldhouse.

We realize that having a place where dogs can safely and legally play within West Bucktown’s borders is important to many of our residents. We also realize that people’s passion for their pooches runs deep, and that any discussion of dogs in city parks often sparks strong emotions on both sides of the argument.  That said, please understand – this meeting is NOT intended to be a forum for airing grievances or logging complaints about the city’s dog laws.  Rather, it is our opportunity to hear firsthand what we can and can’t do about bringing a DFA to West Bucktown.

The Park District has established detailed guidelines to help communities organize, plan, fundraise, construct, and maintain a dog park.  It’s understandably a big commitment, but one that has potential to add real value to our neighborhood if we can gather together enough people with the time and energy to devote to the cause.

If you are unable to attend this meeting but would like to be included in any further dog park discussions, please email westbucktownparks@yahoo.com.  We’ll also plan to share an overview of the meeting in a future email blast.

Last spring, you may remember that we polled West Bucktown residents about what kinds of programs and activities they'd like to see at Maplewood Park.  Well…you spoke, and the Chicago Park District listened!

Registration for Fall programs at Maplewood is now in full swing, and the line-up of classes has never looked better!  Choose from Art & ABCs; Kickball; Kiddie College; Mighty Fit Kids; Moms, Pops & Tots; Seasonal Sports; Soccer; and a Teen Leadership Club. Classes range in age from 18 months to 15 years, so there's something for everyone.  Click here to see the full schedule of programs, including dates, times, and costs (can you say "dirt cheap?").

The Fall session will run from September 24 through December 9, and online registration closes September 30. But whether you register online or in person at the Maplewood Fieldhouse,  you will need to have a Park District account set up. Save time by clicking here to create your account today.

Lucy Flower Fall Planting Oct. 6
IMAGE: Shovel and dirtWith the official start of autumn just around the corner, it’s time to get Lucy Flower Park prepped and ready for the cooler weather.  Thanks to grant money, we’ve got nearly $1000 worth of supplies that need our attention, including plants, mulch, and additional fencing.  Please join us at the park on Saturday, October 6 at 9:00 am, ready to roll up your sleeves and get your hands a little dirty. Bring the kids – we’ll happily put them to work too!  And then come next spring, we’ll ALL revel in the beauty of our collective handiwork!
