The Port Fairy Folk Festival has had a wonderful friendship with the East Coast Music Association (ECMA) Canada for many years, and in 2018 the collaboration became stronger where we now work together to promote and profile the outstanding artists from our respective countries. In 2019 as a part of this partnership we presented the wonderful Tomato/Tomato who enchanted and delighted all at the festival. In 2020 we are thrilled to welcome Hubert Francis, Elsipogtog Elder and musician who was the 2019 recipient of the Dr Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award at the East Coast Music Awards for his "profound and lasting effect" on the Atlantic Canadian music industry.
The Mi'kmaw musician upon receiving the award said he has spent his career trying "to introduce people to themselves — their spiritual selves. I wanted to play my music, I wanted to share my teachings and educate the general public on who I was as an Indian man and share our culture first-hand, instead of watching the John Wayne movies — the stereotype Indian, you know?”
Hubert will be a feature artist in our special First Nations In Songs and Stories concert hosted by Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse, and will be joined by Archie Roach, Mihirangi Fleming, Emily Wurramara and Brett Clarke. Hubert will also feature in some very special collaborative projects.
