Dear Port Fairy Folk Festival Friend,
What a year 2019 will be! And what a festival will be unleashed to satiate our appetites for music, art, words and all round fun!
It is with great please that we announce we will be presenting legendary Mexican-American Alejandro Escovedo, as he tours Australia for the first time in his illustrious career. A true troubadour with an ever expanding clutch of classic and evocative songs, he has won multiple awards including the Americana Music Associations Lifetime Achievement Award, No Depressions’s Artist of the Decade, and in 2019 he will be honoured with the Townes Van Zandt Songwriter Award at the Austin Music Awards. Alejandro is the third recipient of this honour in the Award's 37-year history. He has shared the stage with everyone from Bruce Springsteen to John Prine, and his songs have been recorded by Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Ryan Adams and Calexico, just to name a few.
In 2019 we will also be treated to the many talents of Tim Rogers. In addition to his role in Vandemonian Lags, Tim will also set the festival alight with his sheer talent and energy, and perform songs from his stunning 30 year career.
It is also with absolute delight that we announce that Paul ‘Flacco’ Livingston will launch his debut album and perform as only he can, with his especially designed Port Fairy Folk Festival show: Never Mind The Sex Pistols, Here's The Bollocks - Reading, Writing and Riffing with Paul 'Flacco' Livingston. You will be treated to the multi layered talent and genius that is Paul ‘Flacco’ Livingston, author, comedian, artist, writer and musician. While Paul is best known for Flacco, his guitar playing has remained a well kept secret over the years (particularly to himself), but he can no longer ignore the response from audiences and for the soundtrack he composed for the ABC Doug Anthony All Stars documentary, Tick F***ing Tock. Paul has been outed as a musician and is determined to set the record straight at the Port Fairy Folk Festival... For better or worse.
Apart from launching his first solo guitar CD and demonstrating how easy it is to fool most of the people all of time into thinking you are more talented than you really are, Paul will use his bedroom guitarist tricks to underscore readings from his latest books; a biography/memoir of life on the road with the Allstars – D.A.A.S. Their Part in my Downfall – and his well-received non-fiction memoir of his father’s wartime experiences, Absent Without Leave.
Formerly an art student and animator, Paul will also be presenting an exhibition of his artworks spanning twenty years. With this many feathers in his skull, Paul’s presentation will offer something for everyone.
WOODSTOCK VIBE CONTINUES
In keeping with the Woodstock vibe of 1969 … oops we mean 2019! Those of you who love the ukulele, and we know there are a few! You will have the chance to workshop and jam with The Naked Waiters throughout the weekend in a series of workshops where you can put your talents to Pinball Wizard and Blackbird and be a part of the Almighty Uke Off! on Sunday afternoon in preparation for the Woodstock Fairy Tale.
If that isn’t enough you can also be treated to a magnificent reprise of Suzette Herft’s show Shining – A Diamond in the Rust: A celebration of the life and times of Joan Baez, which brought the houses down in Port Fairy in 2014 and 2015.
And wait there is more …. next week we will put the spotlight on the great tradition of the festival’s writers program from the Aussie Morning Show to the Poet’s Brawl, to stunning book launches and writers workshops, and the iconic Sing A Long. This year we lost Festival legend Rick E Vengeance, who loved to light up our lives through his powerful gift of music. HIs Songbook, the magic of his music and his contributions to the festival will be celebrated and will lift the Shebeen's roof.
