Dear Port Fairy Folk Festival Friend,

Written, spoken, recited or sung, words are an intrinsic part of folklore. With this in mind, we are excited  to reveal the 2019 Writers Program. From established traditions such as the Aussie Morning Breakfast Show and the Pat Glover Storytelling Award to children’s book readings, ‘how to’ workshops, Shebeen singalongs, forums and launches of brand new books from music icons Broderick Smith and Mary Coughlan, there will be something to appeal to all ages and tastes. We hope you enjoy these special events.

Warmest regards,

The Program Team. x

BEST AUSTRALIAN DRINKING STORIES

Jim Haynes
Rum, beer, scotch, wine, beer and more beer. For nearly 250 years, Australian history has been punctuated with stories of booze and boozing. From Cook's voyages and the First Fleet to the Rum Rebellion, the mutiny of the 99th Regiment, the soldiers' riot of 1916, six o'clock closing and beyond, we've been a nation that likes a drink. With the eye of the master storyteller that he is, Jim has collected the best yarns, verses, stories and anecdotes of our boozy history.

As she tells her story with a ribald, running commentary on the highs and lows of celebrity culture, we get to experience an alternative evolution of Ireland in the 70’s and 80’s, populated with hippies, rock stars and movie moguls, and one wild Irish girl determined to live a life less ordinary.

GOD BLESS CHARLIE MOPPS - THE MAN WHO INVENTED BEER!

And he invented a wonderful drink and he made it out of hops…. A fun, historic look at the Aussie love of a fine brew, celebrated in verse, song and singalong!

WALTZING MATILDA - AUSTRALIA’S ACCIDENTAL ANTHEM
W. Benjamin Lindner

Lindner’s long-standing fascination with the life and times of Waltzing Matilda has culminated in Waltzing Matilda – Australia’s Accidental Anthem. There, he explores the how, why, when and where A.B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson collaborated with his fiancée’s friend, Christina Macpherson - having only met her a matter of days before they spawned the song. Criminal barristers often declare that fact is more bizarre than fiction; the factual origins of Waltzing Matilda are no exception. In an effort to debunk ‘fake’ historical claims, Benjamin takes a forensic approach, laying bare the evidence, and along the way he discovers some new twists to a story dating back to 1895.  In the end, you, the reader/jury are left to decide just how, why, when and where Australia’s accidental anthem came to be composed.
SUN    BLARNEY BOOKS & ART    1:00 - 2:15pm
THE PAT GLOVER MEMORIAL STORYTELLING AWARD
This Award has been an integral part of the Port Fairy Festival for many years. The award’s founder, local shanakee and festival stalwart Pat Glover, passed away ten years ago but his spirit remains and we continue to honour his memory with this traditional Port Fairy event.
