Dear Port Fairy Folk Festival Friend,
Earlier this week we were thrilled to announce the introduction of a new Tent City at the Port Fairy Consolidated Primary School, just a short 500m stroll from the Festival Arena and the mighty fine village of Port Fairy…and now it’s back to the all important music. Our festival is known and loved for its capacity to present artists who can enchant and take you to another world. From the glories of listening to Harry Manx with a string section to the wonderful narrative journey in song that will be our two exclusive presentations of Exile - Songs and Tales of Irish Australia. These events command audience participation through being fully immersed in the performance and give due respect to the performers on stage, but - there are other forms of audience participation … perhaps something from the bar and a toe-tap and, maybe, a singalong? That is where The Shebeen comes in. So without further ado here is a snapshot of the Shebeen in 2018.
Opening night in the Shebeen will see direct from the States The Brothers Comatose and some of Australia’s most loved and truly vibrant bands - The Band Who Knew Too Much, Mental As Anything and the Melbourne Ska Orchestra … yes and that’s just opening night in the 'purpose built home of fun' during the Festival. Then throughout the weekend the other fine artists who will grace the stage include Sásta, The Frank Burkitt Band (NZ), boogie woogie piano maestro Ben Waters Band with Derek Nash (UK), The Hillbilly Goats, a morning session with festival favourite Steve Poltz, The Topp Twins will start your Sunday with a smile, Adam Page, The supergroup from Broome The Mexicans, featuring Bart Pigram, Brendan Clarey, Dan Houston, Gavin Pigram, George Bishop, Staf Smith and Tonchi McIntosh; Lily & King, Gordie Mackeeman & His Rhythm Boys and of course the Big Sunday Sing Out with Jimi Hocking…. and there are more announcements to come… brass, fiddles and rhythms galore. And remember this is just one stage at the 2018 Festival.
And if that isn’t enough to get you just a tiny bit excited we are also delighted to announce the return to the Festival of the wonderful Archie Roach, Jordie Lane & The Sleepers, and we welcome for the first time to our fair village Stella Donnelly. Keep reading below for their artist profiles.
During the next few weeks we will be revealing further exciting artists from our fair land and abroad.
Warmest regards as always,
The Program Team x
