CITY-HOSTED FOURTH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MEETING
MONDAY April 4th, 2022 at 7pm

Hello Neighbours,
Hard to believe that it was one year ago when so many community members connected together after the city’s very first community ‘engagement’ meeting re: 175 Cummer Avenue. So much time has passed and the city continues to play hard ball using un-democratic tactics against its very own community members.

This past week many neighbours received an (e)flyer letting us know that the City is hosting its fourth community meeting re: modular housing at 175 Cummer Avenue. The meeting will be held virtually on Monday April 4th at 7pm. Just to re-iterate, the city has NOT been granted the MZO by the Province, so the city is now proceeding to apply to themselves to REZONE this parcel of land. Please remember to log in/dial into the meeting and share your concerns.

We know that so many of you feel these city meetings are an orchestrated sham and we 100% agree with you that it is incredibly infuriating to participate in these meetings, especially when so many ruthless dirty tactics are used for exclusion rather than inclusion. However it’s important that their tactics aren’t successful in silencing the community’s voices. We need to show up Monday night and continue to ask the hard questions that ONE YEAR Later, the city still FAILS to answer. Why isn’t the city protecting our most vulnerable members of society, the nearly 700 Seniors at Willowdale Manor and Cummer Lodge who are just metres away? What about the destruction of the parklands and the mature trees used for social recreation and mental wellbeing, that research and the city’s own policies indicate are key to the long term health of our seniors. What about the fact that there are still serious land planning issues that have not been resolved? What about the fact that in 1998 the OMB (Ontario Municipal Board) ruled against the rezoning and development for this very same 175 cummer site. https://drive.google.com/file/d/15xdyDYJZlRzq5Z4zivWn-iIs3uvb1pzK/view. What were the alleged 50 other sites that were considered as alternatives and how was this one selected? The list goes on and on and on.

The City of Toronto's attack on Seniors rights continues, led by Mayor John Tory himself. The Mayor and City staff and councillors continue to pretend that the seniors in their care at Willowdale Manor do not even exist!

Thanks to MPP Stan Cho, the Ontario Government Minister Steve Clark have refused to fast track the City's plan to strip the elderly low income residents of Willowdale Manor seniors care home (a city-run seniors housing facility!) of their protected green treed parklands.

But City Council will proceed to approve its own rezoning application on May 11, 2022, in clear defiance of the community, the seniors and the Province.

Opponents will be forced to appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal - because Mayor Tory's Toronto will not simply choose any one of dozens of alternative sites ... sites which they have already secretly disclosed to the Federal Government funding agency but refuse to disclose to the public.... more on that scandal in the next newsletter.
