Winemaker Jeff Keene gives you an inside look at our exceptional 2011 Stepping Stone by Cornerstone Corallina Napa Valley Syrah Rosé

2011 Corallina Napa Valley
Syrah Rosé

Stepping Stone by Cornerstone

This wine means a lot to us. I think sharing it with you is the best way possible to show you the direction our vision is taking Cornerstone. So how does a rosé tell you something about a winery famed for making big Napa Valley cabernets? Well one thing I hope it tells you is that we are not about big anymore. With the 2007 vintage Cornerstone Cellars embarked in a new direction with acidity and balance being our cornerstones, not simple brute power. Obviously the white wines and, of course, this rosé make it to the market far more quickly than our red wines so in a very real sense these wines give you a preview of the future of all our wines.

What you will find in the 2011 Corallina Syrah Rosé is the spirit that is driving all of our choices in the vineyard and in the cellar. There are several unique aspects to this wine. First of all it is a single vineyard, Boyd Vineyard is a cooler site with mature syrah vines in the Oak Knoll District. We select the vineyard for our Corallina Syrah Rosé long before bud break so that every vineyard decision throughout the growing season is made with only one goal in mind: to make a great rosé. The fact that it is not a saignée allows us to pick the fruit when the flavors are ripe without out having to wait for full phenolic ripeness in the skins as you do when you make a saignée from grapes harvested to make a red wine. The deep natural color in our syrah fruit means that we get more than enough color and flavor from the extremely gentle three hour press-run.  As we can harvest earlier that gives us higher acids and lower sugar levels, which allows us to ferment to total dryness without excessive alcohol levels. Following months of a slow, cold fermentation in stainless steel our Corallina Syrah Rosé spends five months on the lees in mature French Oak barrels to let all of its elements achieve perfect harmony.

The result is a distinctive rosé that shows its unique Napa Valley personality that is on par with the finest and most expensive rosé wines made anywhere in the world. To say that we are proud of this wine would be an understatement. The fact that we put so much effort and passion into our Corallina Syrah Rosé should give you some insight to the intensity with which we approach all of our wines. I encourage you to watch the short video at the top of this message to let winemaker Jeff Keene tell you himself what makes this wine so special.
