Workshop at CAA 2016, Oslo Supporting researchers in the use and re-use of archaeological data ARIADNE will be running a workshop at CAA in Oslo on Wednesday the 30th March. Following a call for papers to be presented at the workshop on the topic of access, discovery and research reuse of archaeological datasets, there will be several presentations and case studies which will continue the discussion stared at 2015 CAA.
Old excavation data – what can we do?
Workshop on legacy archaeological datasets organized by OEAW at the 10th ICAANE, Vienna, Austria on the 28th April, 2016.

See the Events page for further archaeological conferences, workshops and seminars.

Services

Visual Media Tool updated
The ARIADNE Visual Media Service (the service related to the conversion of 2D/RTI/3D data assets in a web-compliant format, thus supporting easy publication and visualization on the web) has been extended and updated on the ARIADNE server. The new features added to the service are:
  • Support for point clouds (the usual datasets produced by TOF devices)
  • Support for texture-mapped triangle meshes.
  • Use of a new compressed version of multi-resolution encodIng for 3D models
  • Increased flexibility of the 3D browser
Users may access, test and use the Visual Media Service at: http://visual.ariadne-infrastructure.eu/
DARIAH Visual Media Directory
CNR is also developing a web-based directory of all resources (open source tools, free software libraries, commercial systems) which could be proficiently used to manage Visual Media in Digital Humanities in the framework of the DARIAH Working Group on Visual Media and Interactivity. The first version of the directory went live in autumn 2015. This is now under revision - a section on Audio/Video resources will be added and there will be a new
categorization of Visual data. The revised version should be ready in spring 2016. The directory is online at: http://dariah-it.isti.cnr.it/.

Activities

CAA Recycle Award
CAA is launching an annual Recycle Award to recognize those who breathe new life into old data.  The award will be presented jointly to the best example of data re-use presented at the CAA International Conference and the project or institution that made the data available. Further information: http://www.ariadne-infrastructure.eu/News/CAA-Recycle-Award

ARIADNE Portal - coming soon!

The ARIADNE Infrastructure is now in its final year and we are preparing for the launch of the portal this spring.  Our partners are involved in acceptance testing whilst the technical developers are completing the integration of services and components into the interoperability platform. The portal already includes over 1.5 million records with more being added daily as partners map and ingest their content. Watch this space for more news about the launch of services.

Partners will be disseminating information about the project throughout the year in conference sessions, paper presentations, posters and workshops to come.  Last month, we ran training workshops on archaeological data management in Vienna and Ljubljana (pictured above) in January which went very well.  ARIADNE will be at CAA 2016 in Oslo in force with a session on supporting researchers in the use and reuse of archaeological data.

The call for applications for trans national access to ARIADNE centres is open with opportunities for training in 3D documentation, designing archaeological datasets, mapping to the CIDOC CRM and the digital curation of archaeological  knowledge. We will be disseminating the call via Twitter and  social media, please help us to spread the word to young researchers.

2016 TNA Call for Applications open

The 2016 call for applications for TNA summer schools and individual training is now open. This year the TNA offer includes:
  • Training in mapping datasets to the CIDOC CRM for individuals or small groups, at PIN in Prato<
  • Training in the design and structure of archaeological datasets containing scientific data (or mapping of existing scientific datasets to the CIDOC CRM), at PIN in Prato
  • Summer school: 2D/3D documentation for archaeology, at ISTI-CNR in Pisa. June 20th-24th, 2016.
  • Summer school: Design of archaeological datasets, at ISTI-CNR in Pisa. 4-8 July 2016
  • Summer school: Design of archaeological datasets, at Athena RC in Athens. 12-17 June, 2016.

Special Interest Groups report

The Grey Literature SIG met in December 2015 (via Skype) to discuss the newly published article “A Reassessment of Archaeological Grey Literature: semantics and paradoxes” by  Tim Evans. This article represents a synthesis of many years of research on the history, meaning and issues surrounding the role of Grey Literature in archaeology in the UK, and was taken as a point of departure to explore perceptions of Grey Literature in other countries. Archaeological data management workshops highly successful

Two highly successful one-day training events were held on the 19th and 21st of January on the topic of archaeological data management. These were hosted at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OEAW) in Vienna and at the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU) in Ljubljana. Both events were very well attended with around forty participants each. The workshops were delivered by Holly Wright and Kate Fernie and covered the topics of risks and strategies for dealing with digital data, the data lifecycle, data management plans, archiving and repositories, data sharing and interoperability and the ARIADNE Portal services which include the Visual media and Landscape services. The training materials are available on the website at: http://www.ariadne-infrastructure.eu/Resources/Training-Materials.
