Weekly Picks From the Band
Book of the Week
The World Without Us is a non-fiction book about what would happen to the natural and built environment if humans suddenly disappeared, written by American journalist Alan Weisman. It is a book-length expansion of Weisman's own February 2005 Discover article "Earth Without People". Written largely as a thought experiment, it outlines, for example, how cities and houses would deteriorate, how long man-made artifacts would last, and how remaining lifeforms would evolve.
Movie of the Week
Gomorrah (Italian: Gomorra) is a 2008 Italian film directed by Matteo Garrone, based on the book by Roberto Saviano. It deals with the Neapolitan crime syndicate known as the Camorra, which is based in Naples and Caserta in the southern Italian region of Campania. The film opens with the shootings of gangsters relaxing in a tanning salon. It then intertwines five separate stories of people whose lives are touched by organized crime. Gomorra received positive reviews from critics. As of November 20, 2009, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported 106 positive reviews and 11 negative, giving the film an 91% critical approval rating.
Album of the Week
Realism is an album by The Magnetic Fields. It was officially released on January 26, 2010 by Nonesuch Records. Described by songwriter Stephin Merritt as "my folk album", the instrumentation of Realism is largely acoustic, stark in contrast to the band's previous album, Distortion, released in 2008. Merritt said he "thought of the two records as a pair" and considered titling the albums True and False; ultimately, he couldn't decide which title would correspond with which album. Along with Distortion and the 2004 album i, Realism was also recorded without the use of synthesizers, completing the band's "no-synth trilogy".
