North American Quitline Consortium
Dear NAQC Members,

On March 11, 2015, NAQC’s Research Manager, Maria Rudie, presented data from the FY2013 Annual Survey. These data provided important information on progress towards NAQC Strategic Goals for 2015, and showed that quitlines have done tremendous work to surpass the NAQC Quit Rate Goal of 30% (31.6% for FY2013)!

Historically NAQC has conducted an annual survey of quitlines to gather data on quitline services, budget and funding sources, cost sharing activities, utilization, demographics and evaluation. Over the past few months, NAQC staff has reflected on the Annual Survey and discussed ways to streamline the data collection process, and gather high quality data on emerging and innovative practices (i.e., Medicaid and cost sharing activities), while reducing the burden on quitlines.

To address those needs, NAQC staff has decided to shift away from the large Annual Survey, to a smaller and more focused survey of quitlines that asks core questions to help monitor quitline services, funding, reach and quit rates. NAQC staff will then use small key informant interviews with select quitline funders and service providers to gather information on emerging and innovative practices. The information will be used to keep you updated on progress through webinars, issue papers and other resources.

We aim to field the Core Annual Survey September 2 to October 6, 2015. It will be based on the historical Annual Survey and cover FY2015 (July 2014 to June 2015). NAQC staff is currently reviewing the Annual Survey questionnaire to determine ways to reduce the number of questions asked while continuing to gather comprehensive data on quitline budgets, funding sources, utilization, demographics and evaluation data. The goal for the revised survey is to reduce the reporting burden on quitlines. We will seek the NAQC Advisory Council’s review of the revised questionnaire prior to the survey being finalized.

Although we had hoped to conduct the Annual Survey in Canada as well as the U.S. this year, Canadian funding has not come through for the survey. Health Canada will be in touch with provincial quitlines about ways to monitor quitline progress in Canada.

If you have questions or concerns about these changes please contact Maria Rudie, NAQC Research Manager (mrudie@naquitline.org) or me (lbailey@naquitline.org).

I hope to see you at NAQC Conference 2015 in August!
