Update on the National Tobacco Education Campaign
Congratulations to CDC, the state quitlines and all others who have been working to make the National Tobacco Education Campaign such a success!
During the first week of the campaign (March 19-25) call volume more than doubled nationally, from 14,500 calls to over 33,000 calls. On Monday, March 26, quitlines experienced the largest daily call volume of the campaign! And calls during the second week continued to be strong.
This groundbreaking campaign was launched on March 15, 2012, to raise awareness of the human suffering caused by smoking and to encourage smokers to quit. The campaign is called Tips From Former Smokers and it features real people who have experienced a variety of illnesses stemming from tobacco use, including cancer, heart attack, stroke, asthma, and Buerger’s disease. The ads not only show the toll that these smoking-related illnesses have taken on these individuals’ lives, but they also provide encouragement to quit smoking and information on how to access free help.
The campaign ads began airing on March 19th and will run nationally for 12 weeks on television, radio, billboard, magazine, newspaper, theater, and online placements (such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube).

Build public awareness of the immediate health damage caused by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke
Encourage smokers not to smoke around others and nonsmokers to protect themselves and their families from exposure to secondhand smoke
