Deadlines Approaching for the YAYA Awards and KBD Mini-Grants!

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to  inform you of important updates from The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids Youth Advocacy Team. Please find the details below.

Do you know a youth advocate working on a great tobacco prevention project? They could be recognized for it!  2015 YAYA Applications are open! This year, we will again honor (1) National winner, (1) Group winner and (4) Regional winners. Please share this information widely with the incredible youth advocates you work with and encourage them to apply! Learn more at www.tinyurl.com/applyYAYA.
The deadline for YAYA Applications is Jan. 31st, 2015
Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism when youth advocates, teachers and community leaders  organize events that empower young people to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. This year’s Kick Butts Day will be held on March 18, 2015 and marks the 20th year for this annual day of engagement.
More than 1,000 events took place across the United States and on military bases last year. Help us make this year’s Kick Butts Day the biggest and best ever by hosting even more events! Check out the Kick Butts Day Activities Database and search for “easy and quick events” to plan an easy, fun and engaging Kick Butts Day celebration.

- Signature Activity:
New this year to Kick Butts Day is our 2015 Signature Activity: #NotAReplacement. According to the 2014 Surgeon General’s Report, each smoker who dies of a tobacco-related illness is replaced by two new young smokers. We’re encouraging youth to participate in our selfie statement campaign to let Big Tobacco know they refuse to be replacement smokers: They are musicians, athletes, artists and so much more. To participate, take a selfie with a printed selfie statement and upload the picture to social media using the hashtag #NotAReplacement.
There are now more ways than ever to celebrate Kick Butts Day, and we look forward to everyone’s selfies and events! If you have any questions about planning a Kick Butts Day event or what resources are available, contact our team at kbdinfo@kickbuttsday.org.
- Mini-Grants:
We are happy to announce that we will again offer mini-grants to help cover the costs of qualifying Kick Butts Day events. Interested organizers can apply for a $150, $250 or $500 mini-grant. Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Learn more about applying for mini-grants at www.tinyurl.com/minigrantsFAQ.

Mini-grant applications are due Feb. 6th, 2015.
For questions please contact Gustavo Torrez, Associate Director of Youth Advocacy at gtorrez@tobaccofreekids.org.
