Pilgrim Congregational Church Covenant
We pledge to seek justice, to oppose violence, racism, sexism, fear of differences, economic inequity and abuse of power. We promise to substitute acts of goodwill and caring; to feed the hungry, to provide shelter for the homeless, to nurture the ill, and to prevent cruelty to any of God’s children, or any of God’s creatures. We pledge ourselves to welcome people of all sexual orientations into the full life and ministry of the church.

Second Sunday of Advent

Today is Thursday, December 6, 2018

Dear Pilgrim Friends,

Join us on Sunday, December 9 for a very special celebration in worship – a retelling of the Christmas story according to Matthew and Luke. Some of Pilgrim’s kids will showcase their dramatic skills in “Matt & Lucy’s Version Births”!

December 16 will be a wonderful celebration of new members, with Pastor Brooke preaching for the last time as our student pastor. The sermon is “Everything I Needed to Know about Ministry I Learned at Pilgrim Church.” We’ll also follow a longstanding tradition of gifting each family or member with a bell ornament, and bells will be ringing through worship by our Bell Choir.

I hope to see you in worship!

Pastor Kelly

Winter Book Series – December 11

Join Pastor Kelly on Tuesday, December 11 for the second session of the Winter Book Series, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Lakewood Panera (14701 Detroit Ave). The book is Plainsong by Kent Haruf. “Ambitious, but never seeming so, Kent Haruf reveals a whole community as he interweaves the stories of a pregnant high school girl, a lonely teacher, a pair of boys abandoned by their mother, and a couple of crusty bachelor farmers. From simple elements, Haruf achieves a novel of wisdom and grace – a narrative that builds in strength and feeling until, as in a choral chant, the voices in the book surround, transport, and lift the reader off the ground.” (National Book Award citation)
Spirits & Social Justice: Giving

At the Spirits & Social Justice event on December 13 at 6:30 p.m. (please note date correction from last week’s bulletin), we will discuss giving. Why do we give? To whom do we give? When do we give? What do we mean by giving? The event is at Hansa Brewery at 2717 Lorain Avenue in Ohio City.

Spirits & Social Justice events will continue until June 2019, every 2nd Thursday of the month. Join us for a conversation about religion and social justice, right here in your neighborhood ... with free appetizers!

Stewardship
Through this past Sunday, December 2nd, we have received 63 pledges totaling $162,804 for the support of the Mission and Ministry of Pilgrim Church for 2019. This brings us to 89% of our goal, so you can see we're making good progress. There's still time if you've not yet pledged for next year. Pledge cards are available on the ushers table in the back of the sanctuary. Thank-you for your generosity as we respond to the question:  What Shall We Bring?
Food Pantry Needs...
The Food Pantry especially needs your small-size toiletries, diapers, feminine products, grocery store bags (better yet, strong reusable bags you’re not using), toilet paper & paper towels, bar soap, laundry & dish detergent, toothpaste & toothbrushes. Thanks!

Stand with Us – Interfaith Prayer Vigil Thursdays

We invite people of faith and conscience to take part in a weekly interfaith prayer vigil held outside of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office at 925 Keynote Circle, Brooklyn Heights. Our goal is to unite and amplify many faith voices calling for compassion and justice to guide the actions of ICE and to bear witness to ICE-imposed injustices and human rights violations taking place in our communities. We welcome non-partisan signage that lifts up values of justice, peace, compassion and hospitality to the immigrant. You can help us to stand up with and for our immigrant neighbors with your “ministry of presence.” If you are able, please come to this prayer vigil, led by rotating faith leadership every Thursday from 4pm to 4:45pm.

Seeking Sunday School Teachers

We have a small but wonderful group of children at Pilgrim, and depend on caring adult church members to teach and share activities with them on Sundays (after Passing of the Peace) on a rotating basis, once or twice monthly as preferred. Teaching experience a bonus, background check with Safe Church Policy orientation needed, love of children a must! Please see Halldor Gudmundsson or Xander Gallagher.

Matt & Lucy’s Version Births
One of the highlights of our Sunday School this fall is going to be the Christmas Musical Pageant, Matt & Lucy’s Version Births. The Sunday School children and youth with the help from animals in our choir will perform the pageant during service on December 9. You don't want to miss this!
