Pilgrim Congregational Church Covenant
We pledge to seek justice, to oppose violence, racism, sexism, fear of differences, economic inequity and abuse of power. We promise to substitute acts of goodwill and caring; to feed the hungry, to provide shelter for the homeless, to nurture the ill, and to prevent cruelty to any of God’s children, or any of God’s creatures. We pledge ourselves to welcome people of all sexual orientations into the full life and ministry of the church.

Baptism of Christ Sunday

Today is Thursday, January 10, 2019

Dear Pilgrim friends,

Winter weather has arrived! Stay safe and bundled up, and join us in church this Sunday, when we’ll hear about the baptism of Jesus and remember the sacrament’s meaning in our lives and faith.

Next Tuesday is January’s book discussion at Lakewood Panera; join us if you’d like to reflect on the story and spiritual insights of Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng.

Pilgrim’s Annual Meeting is coming up on January 27, and we’ll share some information related to that on Sunday. We’ll share a pizza lunch on the day of the meeting, and invite you to bring a favorite salad contribution to share.

New Year Blessings,
Pastor Kelly

Save the Date:
Sunday, January 27, is Pilgrim’s annual meeting, after worship. The congregation will review what we have experienced and accomplished in the past year and vote on the proposed budget and leadership for 2018. All members are invited and encouraged to attend, and visitors are welcome to stay as well. Following the meeting, lunch will be served.

Pizza, drinks and desserts will be provided and we invite all of Pilgrim’s membership to bring their favorite salad dish to share!

Leadership Gathering … Calling all board members
Saturday, February 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 am is a leadership gathering for Pilgrim’s 2019 Council and board members. This will be a time for new and returning leaders to get an orientation or refresher of church structure and governance, the respective roles of Council, boards and committees, staff and an introduction to others sharing leadership roles. Please mark your calendars and plan to be there if you are serving on a board or Council in 2019.
Hop on Board the Kitchen Ministry Train
You can now volunteer to be a Coffee Hour Helper by simply signing your name on the schedule posted in the Pilgrim kitchen. You will find the schedule hanging on the freezer on the right side of the kitchen. You can sign up for a single Sunday or become a monthly helper. Either way, Coffee Hour Helpers experience the fun and fellowship that comes from being part of the Kitchen Ministry.

The duties of a Coffee Hour Helper include reporting to the kitchen at 10:00 AM to help prepare refreshments for coffee hour. Don’t worry about not knowing what to do.  Alice Willis or another experienced Kitchen Ministry Team member will be there to show you how it’s done. When preparations are completed, you go upstairs for worship. As the last hymn begins to play, you will go back down to the kitchen for final preparations and serving. Cleanup will take until about 12:30pm.

You will enjoy the experience of serving your Pilgrim friends and creating a nurturing environment for Christian fellowship. Perhaps you will be reminded of the words of Jesus, who said, “Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant.”  –Mark 10:43.

Of course, you may still volunteer by contacting Peg Calamia-Downing at (216) 258-7243 or shamrock2006@cox.net

Food Pantry Needs...
The Food Pantry especially needs your small-size toiletries, diapers, feminine products, toilet paper & paper towels, bar soap, laundry & dish detergent, toothpaste & toothbrushes. Clean hats & gloves and new underwear & long johns are always welcome. No plastic bags or egg cartons are needed at the moment.
Stand with Us – Interfaith Prayer Vigil Thursdays
We invite people of faith and conscience to take part in a weekly interfaith prayer vigil held outside of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office at 925 Keynote Circle, Brooklyn Heights. Our goal is to unite and amplify many faith voices calling for compassion and justice to guide the actions of ICE and to bear witness to ICE-imposed injustices and human rights violations taking place in our communities. We welcome non-partisan signage that lifts up values of justice, peace, compassion and hospitality to the immigrant. You can help us to stand up with and for our immigrant neighbors with your “ministry of presence.” If you are able, please come to this prayer vigil, led by rotating faith leadership every Thursday from 4pm to 4:45pm.

Seeking Sunday School Teachers
We have a small but wonderful group of children at Pilgrim, and depend on caring adult church members to teach and share activities with them on Sundays (after Passing of the Peace) on a rotating basis, once or twice monthly as preferred. Teaching experience a bonus, background check with Safe Church Policy orientation needed, love of children a must! Please see Halldor Gudmundsson or Xander Gallagher for details.
