Bringing Neighbors Together to Build Community

Volunteer Opportunities Abound in West Colfax

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

A huge THANK YOU to the Volunteers that came out in April to help plant trees with WeCAN! It was a beautiful morning of meeting new neighbors, community building, and beautifying Denver with more trees!

There are many more volunteer opportunities coming to West Colfax in the next few months; It’s a great way to meet some neighbors and give back to the neighborhood we all call home. For the 6th year in a row, WeCAN will be partnering with Extreme Community Makeover (ECM) and Confluence Ministries for a Neighborhood Clean-up Day on May 20th. Or join us for our first WeCAN Colfax Marathon Water Station on May 21st. (More events about these two events below) And we’ll be handing out candy on a bike ride event along the Lakewood Gulch trail June 24th and participating in the Neighborhood Festival August 5th. Hope you can join WeCAN and your neighbors this summer!

Kind Regards,

Nadia Hafeez Patrick & Leah Rounds

WeCAN Co-Presidents

At the Next WeCAN General Meeting – May 9, 2017

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a multi-disciplinary approach to deterring criminal behavior through environmental design; it uses specific design practices such as improving visibility and strategically planting vegetation to increase surveillance and limit points of entry in public areas. Criminals will take the path of least resistance; this CPTED Training provided by Community Resource Officer Anderson will teach the individuals and community of West Colfax crime prevention techniques to implement at their own home and in the neighborhood. Come learn what you can do to help keep West Colfax safe!

Terry Freeman from the West Colfax Food Co-op will be at this month’s General Meeting to share the recent market study completed by the Co-op. Come learn about what it takes to bring a Food Co-op to West Colfax and how to become a member.

Please bring your diaper and wipe donations to the May 9th General Meeting; WeCAN participates in the annual NW Denver Rocky Mountain Diaper Depot Diaper Drive every May. If you can't make it to the May 9th meeting, drop off your donations at the Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzalez library (1498 Irving St.) anytime in the month of May.

West Colfax Clean-up Day, May 20

WeCAN is once again partnering with Extreme Community Makeover (ECM) and Confluence Ministries for a West Colfax Clean-up Day! This is a great way to partner with your neighbors to complete exterior home repair or improvement projects for a neighbor in need, clean up trash on the streets and alleys, remove graffiti, and meet your neighbors.

When: Saturday, May 20 - 9:00am - 4:00pm

Where: Confluence Ministries (1400 Quitman St.)

Lunch will be provided. Projects are generally completed by 4:00pm; come for half or the full day! Children of all ages are welcome to come with an adult willing to work with and supervise them. Contact if you’d like to get involved.

Not Running the Colfax Marathon? Volunteer!
Colfax Marathon Water Station

May 21st is the Colfax Marathon. Thousands of runners from near and far will run 26.2 miles at 5280’ altitude. No less than three exciting races will run right through the heart of West Colfax, including the full marathon, urban 10 miler, and relay.

WeCAN will be operating a water station at Colfax and Sheridan, the gateway to our neighborhood. This is a great way to get involved in your neighborhood and show some West Colfax pride. The 2017 water station theme is "Justice League". So grab your Superman or Wonder Woman costume and help support this year's runners.

Contact for more information and sign up. You can also find more information on our Event Page.

(Don't want to get wet but still want to be part of the action? Come down and be part of our cheering squad!)
