The West Colfax
Association of Neighbors(WeCAN)
is the Registered Neighborhood Organization (RNO) for the neighbors who live, work, or own property in the West Colfax neighborhood.
WeCAN meets the second Tuesday of every month, 6:00pm, in the main hall of the Confluence Ministries building, 1400 Quitman Street.
Bringing Neighbors Together to Build Community

Neighbors and Friends,

On August 22, 2016, Denver City Council voted to put a one-year moratorium on garden court row homes – homes with a narrow parking lot between two buildings, often with garages on the first level of the home.  These structures have been nick-named “slot homes” by Christine Franck, a professor at the College of Architecture and Planning at CU Denver.  Ms. Franck, in conjunction with the Center for Advanced Research in Traditional Architecture (CARTA), has done a study of the West Colfax neighborhood to determine the long-term impacts of this housing form on our neighborhood.  The study looks at the architecture, quality of the buildings, the land covenants attached to the properties, and the impact such structures have on crime in adjacent neighborhoods.

She will present her findings and answer any questions at the September 13, 2016 WeCAN general meeting.  Councilmen Rafael Espinoza (District 1) and Paul Lopez (District 3) will also be in attendance to answer any questions you may have about the moratorium.  We hope you will join us for this very important discussion about ongoing and future development in our neighborhood.

Kind Regards,

Nadia Hafeez Patrick and Leah Rounds
WeCAN Co-Presidents

Volunteer Opportunity in the Neighborhood: Whiz Kids Tutoring

Whiz Kids Tutoring has been helping kids in metro Denver for over 25 years and has a site right here in the West Colfax neighborhood.  Whiz Kids pairs one adult with one student to meet once a week for one hour of tutoring in basic math and reading. The students attend Colfax Elementary School and are selected by a licensed classroom teacher.  The Colfax site is hosted by Confluence Ministries where it has been a staple of their programs from the beginning. Tutors and students meet together on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30pm for tutoring with an optional faith-based club time from 5:30-6:00pm.  Tutors receive materials and are trained and supported by on-site Whiz Kids staff. Tutors commit to one school year beginning September 27 and concluding April 25. Fill out an application today at: www.whizkidstutoring.com or call Linda Binkley, site coordinator at 303-912-1754.
