Bringing Neighbors Together to Build Community

Welcome Back and Invitation to West Colfax Neighborhood Festival

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

WeCAN is back from Summer Break and we hope you've been enjoying this summer. Denver Days will soon be in full effect, running from August 5-13. Each year, Mayor Michael Hancock encourages everyone in Denver to organize block parties and events to get connected with your neighbors.

WeCAN invites you to join the West Colfax neighborhood festival on Saturday August 5 from 11am-3pm at Cheltenham Elementary School, 1580 Julian Street. Organized by Confluence Ministries, this free festival features food and refreshments, music, games, face painting, contests, and more. WeCAN will again be staffing the beverage station this year. Come down, say hello, and enjoy the festivities. We hope to see you there!

Warm regards,

Nadia Hafeez Patrick and Leah Rounds
WeCAN Co-Presidents

Next General Membership Meeting – August 8, 2017

The next General Membership meeting will be held on Tuesday August, 8 and we hope to see you there. Last year Denver voters passed Ordinance 300, which allows for social marijuana use and clubs. Denver recently finalized the rules and regulations for these clubs, working with a cross functional advisory board. WeCAN is assembling a panel to present the new regulations, pros, and cons of Ordinance 300. In addition, as a "place based organization", WeCAN has a voice in the permitting process for clubs in the West Colfax neighborhood. WeCAN would like your input on how you'd like the organization to be engaged during the notification and permitting process.  Come learn more and have your questions answered.

Also at the General Meeting, David Zucker of Zocalo Community Development will be on hand to present a rezoning proposal for a residential development on the site of the Sloans Lake Rehabilitation Hospital located at West 17th Avenue and Newton Street. This proposal includes a mid-rise apartment complex and a high-rise condominium tower.

And as always, WeCAN will share neighborhood events and Community Resource Officer Bob Anderson will be at the meeting to share crime statistics and answer your questions and concerns.

Back to School

Denver Public Schools students return to school on August 21.  West Colfax has multiple elementary and middle schools within the neighborhood.  Please remember to slow down and stay alert in school zones.
