1. Alain Choquette Lecture - Oct 26th

We have the 2nd Event of our 2022-2023 Season happening this Wednesday and with your club membership you get free access to this event. Please let us know if you can attend so we can plan effectively!
RSVP
  • As per Alain Choquette's request, this lecture will NOT be recorded, so there will NOT be a streaming link after the event. And it won't be streamed on Zoom, so if you want to learn the secrets, you have to be there in person!

  • Due to talent and venue availability, we are not always able to maintain a Thursday event date or keep a regular location. That said, on Wednesday we are excited to see what club member Eric Wolfe has been working on at the Red Sandcastle Theatre, an ideal spot for parlour shows. The Theatre does have a mask policy in place as part of their safety protocols that we will be respecting. More info on their policy can be read HERE
When: Wednesday, October 26th, 7PM (lecture start)
Admission: FREE for members / $15 for non-members
Where: The Red Sandcastle Theatre, 922 Queen St East

Alain Choquette has been a stage and TV performer for more than 35 years.

He started on TV as a weekly guest on AdLib (a popular Quebec talk show), and then mounted his first show, “Première Apparition,” for four years in Canada and Atlantic City, including a six-month engagement at the famous Caesar’s Palace. Two effects from that show were subsequently performed by David Copperfield: “Dream of Aces” and “The Verdict”, where 12 people from the audience disappeared.

He has appeared NBC’s World’s Greatest Magic and Champions of Magic (where he presented his version of “Gypsy Thread” and “Blueprint” to Princess Stephanie of Monaco). This was followed by a tour with The Rockettes (of Radio City Music Hall).  In the 1990s, he performed for the closing of the Montreal Forum, a show that was attended by over 101,000 people over ten days. During his long and illustrious career, Alain has toured extensively across North America and the world and has starred in many shows, including “Drôlement Magique,” which travelled to France, Belgium and Switzerland.

During his lecture, Alain will share with you his philosophy of magic, as well as some of the creations that he has performed during his 35-year long career.

You will witness mentalism, stage, parlour, and close up magic, plus tricks to fool other magicians. No matter your level of performance, you will find something for unique for you. That is a guarantee!

2. Updates

Just a few notes on things going on with your club!
  • The video of Jeff Hinchliffe's lecture on Sept 29th that was shot by Chris Mayhew is getting its final edit and will be available to all members shortly! Art takes time, people! With upcoming Events, we do ask performers for permission to record them and the decision is up to them. And as much as we would like to be able to stream Events on Zoom, the executive is short-handed and not able to pull this off effectively at the moment. Are you able to help us with this? Let us know!

  • Help us recruit new members! Do you know any magi or magic enthusiasts who would enjoy our club? Tell them about us or bring them to a Meet-Up! Spread the word!

  • Email invitations have been sent to all members to join the Members Only Facebook Group. If you have not gotten one or are having troubles, please contact 1st VP Colin Geddes (or look him up on Facebook!) who will help get you on board. Of course, some members might not be on Facebook, but at the moment it is the easiest platform for us to have a Forum for Members.
3. Next Casual Meet-Up - Thurs Nov 3rd

When: Thursday, November 3rd, 7PM
Where: The Uptown Pub, 3185 Yonge St / by Lawrence Station

Thanks to those who came out to our last Meet-Up! We've decided to move to a new location after the service and ambiance at Shoeless Joe's was lacking (new ownership?). After our Sept 29th Event, at the suggestion of Treasurer Patrick Nemeth, we settled in at The Uptown Pub which was a relaxed and delightful pub.

Join us on Thursday, November 3rd for another casual social were members can get to know one another, talk magic and and jam on tricks. Bring your cards, coins, silks, ropes or whatever you use. Come with a trick, routine, move, or something interesting related to magic that you've learned over the past 3 years that you can show off to real live people! No Zoom tricks allowed!

We are still planning out the agendas for the Meet-Ups and hope to have mini-lectures, demonstrations, trivia, jams, book chats, etc. The field is wide open! And if you have any magician friends who aren't members who are curious about the club, invite them! Happy to have non-members sit in and learn what the club is about.

6. Under the Hat Podcast with Steve Cohen

Dig deep into magic history as our club president David Peck talks to Steve Cohen about his new book Max Malini: King of Magicians, Magician of Kings on the Hat & Rabbit Club's own podcast – Under the Hat. In episode #6, they discuss magic that lingers, long cons, reverse engineering, high hanging fruit, Vernon, seeing your audience as emissaries, psychological layers, why people are interested in people and how every effect should be a closer. Don't miss it!
