1. James Alan Lecture This Thursday!
Dear members! As you will recall, back in August, with great fanfare, we announced we were launching our 2022-2023 season with a lecture by past president James Alan. Remember? And then due to that pesky germ that shall not be named, we had to beg and plead Jeff Hinchliffe to jump into the spotlight for our inaugural event? Worried that the secrets of James Alan are lost in the sands of time? Fear not! We have him back to teach the club some bits of conjuring! Read on!
When: Thursday, January 19th, 7PM (start time for lecture)
Admission: FREE for members, $20 for guests
Where: Agricola Lutheran Church - 25 Old York Mills Road (Free Parking, a kilometre or two from the 401, steps away from the subway and restaurants in the area.)
Note: This is a live event. We are currently looking into getting the lecture recorded, but can't guarantee that it will be possible at present
BUY TICKETS HERE
When it comes to magic in Toronto, James Alan has had his hand in every cookie jar you can think of.
Performing for the public, he has created long-running shows including Magic Tonight (2013-2016) and Magic & Martini (2016-2020), produced shows for visiting international performers including Eugene Burger, Dani DaOrtiz and Asi Wind. For the community, he has been actively involved with the important community outreach programs My Magic Hands and Senior Sorcery.
During the unpleasantness, he was busy in the virtual space, creating Bring Magic Home, with over three hundred shows with audiences in twenty countries. His tricks have been featured in Genii and MAGIC Magazine (which included the most complained about trick in that magazine's history), and his writing has been featured in Vanish, MUM, The Linking Ring, Elixir and Magicol. We know him as the distinguished Ex-President of our club and the disgraced Ex-President of That Other Club.
James performs mainly classical sleight of hand magic. (Which we take to mean he does really hard stuff.) The lecture will be a blend of tricks for close-up and parlour and a discussion of how to assemble material into a long form show for audiences of different sizes.

Where: Agricola Lutheran Church - 25 Old York Mills Road
February Event is Members Night. And you can participate in two ways!

3. Have you see us in The Linking Ring?
Have you had a chance to see the December issue of The Linking Ring featuring the fabulous article The Legacy: An Eighty-Year Overview of I.B.M. Ring 17 by our member Ariel Frailich? This is a terrific account of the folks who have played a part in the Club and continue to make us proud!
And if that wasn't enough, The Hat & Rabbit Club is spotlighted in the Hocus Pocus Parade featuring material by Jeff Hinchliffe, Phil "Wonderphil" Pivnick, Keith Brown, James Alan, Charlie McBurney, Jonah Babins, Brian Robert, Ben Train, Glenn West, Ryan Murray and David Peck. Take a bow everyone! What are we going to do for the 90th or 100th anniversary?

This will be a place for members to socialize, practice, jam and take part in various activities related to, well, MAGIC! Every month there will also be Club Event which will include lectures by professional magicians, panel discussions, workshops, performances, film screenings, dinners, field trips, etc. We will try to schedule Club Events towards the middle or end of the month, but dependent on performer availability, we aren't able to lock in a regular monthly date. As it is getting harder and harder to find ideal and budget conscious venues these days, Club Meetings and Events will take place at various locations around the GTA. We will do our best to be consistent and be aware of proximity to transit lines and parking.
