What Does the Cast Say?

Want a little inside into the Pygmalion process? We sat down with some of the cast and crew and asked them a few questions.

Q: What about #PygmalionUnderground surprises you?

Allison Matteodo (Clara/Mrs. Pearce): I'm surprised Professor Higgins (Chris Chiampa) enjoys hanging out in the Underground as much as he does.  It's like he wants to cast off his upper class upbringing and hang with the cool kids in the subway!

Allison Choat (Freddy Eynsford Hill): How fast it is! It's a very complex show but feels really quick.

Devon Jones (Director): I've been reminded that humor is too intrinsic to human existence; when you enhance the drama, the humor doesn't disappear, it only gets twisted or redirects itself to new targets.

Q: What's the most ridiculous thing that happened in rehearsal?

Katie Bond (Mrs. Higgins):  Whenever J. Deschene is on stage!

Allison C: Every time something funny or inappropriate happens, we've been saying we'll add it to the "midnight show". So that would be quite a show to see.

Q: What aout #PygmalionUnderground are you excited to share with an audience?

Chris Chiampa (Henry Higgins): This slightly retooled version of Pygmalion will, I think, throw the old themes into sharp relief, freeing it from the tyranny of the long shadow of My Fair Lady.

Allison M: I'm excited to share the gritty, tense, hardscrabble atmosphere of the underground, and the comedy.  There are many amusing moments in the show, and I can't wait to smile with the audience!

DevonFor me, the best plays are the ones where you find yourself simultaneously laughing your head off and feeling your skin crawl; this cast is able to superbly deliver that dichotomy.

Q: Describe #PygmalionUnderground in 3 words.

Allison C: Witty, literate, surprising.

Katie: Funny, deeply thoughtful.

Chris: Warm, real, violent.

Allison M: Evocative, desperate, transformational.

Devon: Question all power.
