2014: Three Shows to Challenge Your World

Robin Gabrielli, Sara Jones, James Hayward

Meet the Cast of Reader

Meet the familiar faces and newcomers to the Flat Earth stage in the cast of Reader, a dark dystopia by Ariel Dorfman. Two versions of their characters collide this June in a world where lines can be snipped, endings snapped, and people permanently disappeared.

We are excited to welcome back Robin Gabrielli, starring as Daniel Lucas / Don Alfonso Morales, the government censor confronted by a manuscript that seems to be exposing his secrets and hinting at his devastating future. Robin brings some experience to portraying different versions of the same character, having appeared as Donny Rowan in Flat Earth's Rocket Man last summer, which moved between time-shifted parallel universes and the familiar people within them.

Surrounding Daniel Lucas are his son Nick and ex-wife Tanya, played by James Hayward and Sara Jones. Returning to the stage after directing the radio play Lovecraft’s Unnamable Tales in February (you may also recall him as Peter Evans in Flat Earth's 2011 critically-acclaimed production of Bug), James portrays Lucas's tormented and brooding son Nick as well as Morales's cocky son Enrique and the neurotic writer David Malko. Sara's role as the haunting Tanya doubles as Malko's wife Sonia, who may have a hand in the fiction that is unravelling their collective reality. Sara was last seen onstage as Kathryn Schaub in Radium Girls, Best Production winner at the AACT National Theatre Festival in Carmel, Indiana.

Lucas's smart and sassy secretary Irene and Alfonso's arguably sassier secretary Jacqueline are both brought to life by Rachel Sacks, an actress and puppeteer who also runs a monthly Theatre and Recovery Workshop for adults struggling with mental illness. Controlling them all is the grip of the Director of Moral Resources, played by Samuel Frank. Sam, a member emeritus of the Yale Dramatic Association, comes from a background in musical theatre, having performed in Assassins, Side Show, and The King and I. Finally, Matthew Zahnzinger rounds out the cast in the role of The Man, an elusive and shady character who looms on the borders between the stories. Matthew, who last trod the Flat Earth stage as Niels Bohr in Copenhagen in 2012, regularly collaborates with Moonbox Productions, most recently as Harry in Company.

Reader runs June 13–21, 2014 at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, Black Box Theatre in Watertown. Tickets go on sale in May; visit for more information.
