Major black donors unconvinced by 2020 candidates (POLITICO) “Black donors and business leaders have a problem with the Democratic presidential field: No one is doing enough to earn their support, they say — or to build a durable relationship with black voters for the primary and general elections.

Those concerns have spilled out in awkward exchanges in recent weeks as 2020 Democrats courted black donors in New York City. It’s a community that threw significant support to Kamala Harris and Cory Booker before they dropped out of the presidential race, and while a large number of them have ties to former President Barack Obama, many remain unconvinced by Joe Biden. But none of the alternatives, particularly Pete Buttigieg, have gained much traction either.”

D.C. Council criticizes Evans' Fair Elections participation (The Washington Times) “The D.C. Council on Wednesday questioned decisions by the city’s ethics and elections agencies following a year of scandals that resulted in an expensive special election and a disgraced former lawmaker using taxpayer dollars to fund his campaign despite owing the government money.

Council member Charles Allen, Ward 6 Democrat and chairman of the Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, criticized the Office of Campaign Finance’s decision to allow former council member Jack Evans to participate in the Fair Elections Program even though he owes the Board of Ethics and Government Accountability (BEGA) a fine of $20,000.”

Political Ad Spending Seen Surging 63% to Record $6.89 Billion (Bloomberg) “Spending on political advertising is expected to hit a record this election cycle, creating a windfall for local TV broadcasters and marking a comeback from four years ago. Total spending will reach $6.89 billion, according to a new estimate by EMarketer.

That’s 63% higher than in the 2015-2016 season. The firm attributed the rise to a “highly partisan political environment” that’s driving more donations to candidates who pour that money into marketing themselves.”

One of Klobuchar’s Biggest Backers Is ‘the Worst Company in the World’ (The Daily Beast) “Near the end of a debate performance that arguably pulled her presidential campaign back on track, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) made the case to New Hampshire voters that her family’s hardscrabble background would immunize her from the corrosive effect of money in politics.

“I can’t stand the big money in politics,” Klobuchar said in an exchange about the outsize influence of the super-rich in government. “I didn’t come from money, and I just simply think people don’t look at the guy in the White House and say ‘Can we get someone richer?’ I don’t think they think that.””
